Lots of pubs catch fire. The Manor at Sheldon did as well. It's always reckoned to be an insurance job; the possibility of vagrants dossing down and starting fires to keep warm never gets mentioned.

I used to deal with most of the pubs mentioned a couple of years back through work. The Plough and Harrow on the Small Heath island has been gone for years. I think the Hay Mills Social is still going. The Redhill Tavern shut down a couple of years back. The Swan became The New Inn and is still going I think. The Good Companions became Harry Ramsdens and is now Peachy Keens buffet restaurant but has a bar if you just want to pop in for a pint. The Poacher is now a kennels as someone said. The Journeys is still open, as is The Lyndon who used to show the football on Sky Italia last I heard. The Wagon & Horses was knocked down to build flats, The Clock was knocked down too. The Wheatsheaf and also I think the St Bernards Grange concentrate on food. The Old Bill And Bull and The Three Horseshoes are still going. The Sheldon is now The Crane, The Arden Oak is now The Harvester, not to be confused with the other Harvester off the Old Lode Lane by Elmdon Park. Last I heard the latter of those two was run by a biker blue nose who has a tattoo place based at the pub. I don't know if George IV and Stirrup Cup are still open. The first was being run by a bloke who worked at the Rover last I heard. The second was being run by a bloke I know who is one of the biggest tossers going. Another bloke I know who was a great bloke bought the Aero Club with his mates a fair few years back. No idea if he still has it or if it is still open.

I think the New Inn is a different building to the (new, smaller) Swan. Hay Mills Socal is still going and I believe the Redhill closed for a bit, re-opened then went for good (at the time of writing).

I used to be a bar manager at another pub for the guy who had The Swan when it had the biggest bar in Europe. Great bloke. He had the Olton Hall (as was then), The Book And Candle in Redditch, The Bear at Bearwood and The Lincoln Poacher too in his time. His missus who died a couple of years back was a legend. The only person I ever met who drank 'shorts' in half pint measures. Up to the 'bubble' in the glass then topped off with pop as you would with a dash of lager. I think you are right about the pub being knocked down then rebuilt. I think it was the same with The Good Companions/Harry Ramsdens/Peachy Keans.

Not being funny mate but that's riddled with errors eg. The new inn is a different site to the swan, the stirrup shut years ago, the Lincoln poacher is a vet, the wagon & horses made way for an Aldi not flats , the aero I thought that shut in the 90's

The Good Companions was demolished and up went a new Harry Ramsdens which lasted 3 or 4 years I guess, it then became the Shooting Star pub with a wacky warehouse upstairs, then it became peachy keanes, been in once for a pint - shithole full of noses, never tried the buffet.

Honestly believed The New Inn is where The Swan was. The guy I knew who bought The Stirrup, I am going back probably six or seven years. I thought The Poacher was a kennels. As a vets it probably has kennels so I'm sticking to that one on a technicality Is there not an Aldi and some flats where the Wagon&Horses was.  If not what was where those flats are now (ie, rather bizarrely smack bang in the middle of the Coventry Road)? The bloke I knew was involved in what was The Aero in the mid to late nineties so what happened after that I don't know.

I used to know a couple of blokes who devoted themselves to trying to save The Good Companions. One of them covered the amateur boxing for The Argus. Every time he came into the pub I managed I used to grab the payphone off the bar and tuck it under my chin in honour of his little pen picture in The Argus.

What a place for flats ! Landlocked either side of the A45 next to a petrol station . Nice .

The new inn is a block away from the old swan site.
I'm sure the Aero (old prefab building) went early 90's .

Agree about the location of the flats. I have no recollection whatsoever of the snooker club. I didn't realise about The Swan. When was it knocked down? Late eighties? The bloke I knew who had an interest in the old Aero had it in the nineties so he probably had it just before it went. It would have been around '96/'97 when I went in there and he had it to the best of my recollection. It was an old prefab thing as you say.

The snooker club was called The Triangle.
Used to go there when we were 14/15/16.
Always remember they did rounds of toast and butter at about 5p a go.
