Title: Pubs in Birmingham - Man United (a)
Post by: astonvillan on April 04, 2015, 10:35:45 AM
Hi all

Hope it's ok to put this here. Mods; feel free to move it if not.

Currently travelling back to the Midlands as an exile down in the smoke and wondering if anybody knows of any pubs or sports bars in central Birmingham that will be showing the game today. I realise it's a 3PM kick off and technically they shouldn't show the matches but I've been led to believe a few get it through satellites and whatnot? Rococo is a name I've heard mentioned in the past.

So does anybody know of anywhere that will be showing it? Equally, could potentially get out to VP / Aston area if that was the only option!

Thanks and Up the Villa!

Rococo - now called Mooch apparently,?- seems to have stope showing Villa games due to some restrictions being placed on Broad Street in general.
If anyone has the answer to the question about town pubs showing Villa games - I also need to know for Spurs next Saturday.

Yes Broad Street has gone from 3 bars showing the games to none. The high visibilities of the locations probably didn't help.

Couple in Sutton still show the games.

I refer the gentleman to Ms A's long-heralded reluctance to enter licensed premises.

The Wheatsheaf's a Toby carvery now. In fact, from memory that, the New Inn, Old Bill & Bull and the Horseshoes are the only pubs still open on the A45 from Digbeth to Coventry.

There is The Phantom Coach but that's technically Coventry I guess.
The Wheatsheaf is open but it's a Toby Carvery, The Lyndon went ages ago and has been a harry ramsdens and is now an eat til you explode buffet place with a bar, the St Bernard's grange is still open.
King George V is on Common Lane. The stirrup cup is a spar or similar, The Social Club is still open, the swan went decades ago, old bill and bull is in Hay Mills.

Because I live 150 miles away from Manchester it's a hotbed of Utd support

There is a pub in town that shows every man Utd match on live,
it's always rammed when they play, I actually play darts for a team there and the landlord tells me it's the busiest the pub ever gets including fri/sat nights

Just shows you what a load of plastic bell ends they really are

Btw I was in there yesterday and made my presence known when we scored, I made sure I was standing with two of my biggest mates when I stood on a stool and and jigged about like a twat,
Short lived, but hey ho

You did.  I'd never heard of it. It was called something else when I was younger. Never been in it.
The George V on common lane has a decent back room and beer garden now. Used to be a real tough pub, what was it called ?

Didn't it mysteriously catch fire?
that was the longbridge a blue nose shite hole

Lots of pubs catch fire. The Manor at Sheldon did as well. It's always reckoned to be an insurance job; the possibility of vagrants dossing down and starting fires to keep warm never gets mentioned.

I used to deal with most of the pubs mentioned a couple of years back through work. The Plough and Harrow on the Small Heath island has been gone for years. I think the Hay Mills Social is still going. The Redhill Tavern shut down a couple of years back. The Swan became The New Inn and is still going I think. The Good Companions became Harry Ramsdens and is now Peachy Keens buffet restaurant but has a bar if you just want to pop in for a pint. The Poacher is now a kennels as someone said. The Journeys is still open, as is The Lyndon who used to show the football on Sky Italia last I heard. The Wagon & Horses was knocked down to build flats, The Clock was knocked down too. The Wheatsheaf and also I think the St Bernards Grange concentrate on food. The Old Bill And Bull and The Three Horseshoes are still going. The Sheldon is now The Crane, The Arden Oak is now The Harvester, not to be confused with the other Harvester off the Old Lode Lane by Elmdon Park. Last I heard the latter of those two was run by a biker blue nose who has a tattoo place based at the pub. I don't know if George IV and Stirrup Cup are still open. The first was being run by a bloke who worked at the Rover last I heard. The second was being run by a bloke I know who is one of the biggest tossers going. Another bloke I know who was a great bloke bought the Aero Club with his mates a fair few years back. No idea if he still has it or if it is still open.

I think the New Inn is a different building to the (new, smaller) Swan. Hay Mills Socal is still going and I believe the Redhill closed for a bit, re-opened then went for good (at the time of writing).

I used to be a bar manager at another pub for the guy who had The Swan when it had the biggest bar in Europe. Great bloke. He had the Olton Hall (as was then), The Book And Candle in Redditch, The Bear at Bearwood and The Lincoln Poacher too in his time. His missus who died a couple of years back was a legend. The only person I ever met who drank 'shorts' in half pint measures. Up to the 'bubble' in the glass then topped off with pop as you would with a dash of lager. I think you are right about the pub being knocked down then rebuilt. I think it was the same with The Good Companions/Harry Ramsdens/Peachy Keans.

Not being funny mate but that's riddled with errors eg. The new inn is a different site to the swan, the stirrup shut years ago, the Lincoln poacher is a vet, the wagon & horses made way for an Aldi not flats , the aero I thought that shut in the 90's

The Good Companions was demolished and up went a new Harry Ramsdens which lasted 3 or 4 years I guess, it then became the Shooting Star pub with a wacky warehouse upstairs, then it became peachy keanes, been in once for a pint - shithole full of noses, never tried the buffet.

Honestly believed The New Inn is where The Swan was. The guy I knew who bought The Stirrup, I am going back probably six or seven years. I thought The Poacher was a kennels. As a vets it probably has kennels so I'm sticking to that one on a technicality ;) Is there not an Aldi and some flats where the Wagon&Horses was.  If not what was where those flats are now (ie, rather bizarrely smack bang in the middle of the Coventry Road)? The bloke I knew was involved in what was The Aero in the mid to late nineties so what happened after that I don't know.

I used to know a couple of blokes who devoted themselves to trying to save The Good Companions. One of them covered the amateur boxing for The Argus. Every time he came into the pub I managed I used to grab the payphone off the bar and tuck it under my chin in honour of his little pen picture in The Argus.

Damo, the flats are where the old snooker club used to be , probably 100m further up the A45 adjacent to the Bp.
What a place for flats ! Landlocked either side of the A45 next to a petrol station . Nice .

The new inn is a block away from the old swan site.
I'm sure the Aero (old prefab building) went early 90's .

Good to see you have your finger on the pulse mate  ;D

Agree about the location of the flats. I have no recollection whatsoever of the snooker club. I didn't realise about The Swan. When was it knocked down? Late eighties? The bloke I knew who had an interest in the old Aero had it in the nineties so he probably had it just before it went. It would have been around '96/'97 when I went in there and he had it to the best of my recollection. It was an old prefab thing as you say.

Always remember they did rounds of toast and butter at about 5p a go.

The Swan must have been converted into Ansell's offices with a small lounge remaining in the mid-eighties, then they were gone by about 1991.

That would have been when my old gaffer had it. They used to have a lot of Wet T-Shirt Competitions. I know because he was still showing off his collection of pictures of girls with eighties hairstyles, wet 'The Swan At Yardley' T-shirts and no bras ten years later. Either that or they had one wet T-shirt competition on one occasion and took a hell of a lot of pictures.

The Triangle.  I'd forgotten all about that place. I think it was used in one of the episodes of Give Us a Break which starred Paul McGann back in mid 80s.

Pretty sure the pub on common lane (George V) used to be The Chlemsley ? No idea why that name though as you'd think Chelmsley Wood would be more appropriate a location.

There's a pub on Chester Road called The Toby Jug on Castle Brom / Kingshurst border which purports to show 3.00 p.m. kick offs on a Saturday.

The area seems to be evenly split between Blues and Villa.

However that pub looks like it may attract people banned from other pubs in the area - and beyond. Is this just my perception?

It was a woman called Nina a couple of years ago. I used to deal with her when I was supplying acts for pubs and clubs. A lot of bikers used to use The Poacher down the road when it was still open. Especially when they had the Mr Q's at the back. Although the cue action was often less Jimmy White and more Zorro.

I used to go in The Malt Shovel at lunchtimes in around 2001/2002. The gaffer was an Asian guy called Steve. There always used to be a group of old West Indian guys playing dominoes and slamming them down so hard it made you jump.

Drank in there mid 90's and that's how I remember it. In the days of afternoon closing sometimes ended up in a drinking den on Ralph road. Just a house with a bar and fruit machine.
yeah i remember that place in raph road ,,,,some kind of market traders club , not to be confused with the east birmingham trades and labour club in highfield road nearby
anyway as we have moved onto alum rock/saltley theres ioads closed down round there
including the brookhill recently ,the rock , the havelock , the gate , the tilt hammer , the london tavern , the coachmakers , the whitehouse
the swan , cross guns , barley mow , etc etc

If you are listing the Alum Rock and Washwood Heath roads you can add The Ward End and The Pelham to that list. My mate had The Brookhill and then The Cross Guns a few years back. He left the Brookhill around 2008, had a short spell in Kingstanding and then had The Cross Guns till it closed.

I know a pub in Sutton,  I need one in the city!

Bloody hopeless you lot - pages of reminiscing about watering holes from hell in bandit country are no help at all!
dont think there is one now that its been stopped down broad st
the craven by the mailbox used to have matches on ,,,,,but its changed hands since
but lets face it ,theres not that many pubs in the city centre now apart from on broad st

The Craven Arms doesn't have a TV at
all. It's a real ale place and a lovely pub but they don't really like strangers. You have to enter via the side door rather than the front. I asked why and the barman geniunely told me that it was to discourage people from "just walking in".
Smelly real ale anti-social bore.

Blimey, all the pubs in this thread and all over Brum that have closed down, most likely due to the recession, and this bloke doesn't want customers just walking in.

The Red Lion in Shirley used to have a 'REGULARS ONLY' sign on the door.
