The wheels came off for Sherwood with the Southampton game last season. He got so thoroughly trounced by Koeman in the battle of wits. It was shocking. One of the most moronically naive managerial performances ever. Now granted there was an element of misfortune in as much as Southampton seemed to score from every attack over a 20 minute period, but throughout the whole game the world and his wife could see we were getting buggered senseless by them playing over our high line and sending runners behind. The fact Sherwood couldn't react in any way to that, or seemingly even identify that problem, said it all about him. Absolutely thick as fucking fuck. And every game since was bloody dreadful.
Chancer. He makes Redknapp look like a tactical genius.

Since Southampton has not been good.

How much of this can be put  down to Sherwood.

Transfers in and out   -  surely no one is going  to say he had a free hand.  Our best 3 players sold,  others coming in which were not his  picks.

Not so much the Southampton game, don't forget Ipswich got absolutely hammered by the Villa a week before they  won the cup - its the fact that we peaked in the Everton game two weeks before Southampton (we didnt play well the  week before at home to West Ham but won).

Sherwood won at Tottenham, Sunderland and beat the  Olbion twice (okay both a bit fortunate).

A lot of  grey  areas.

Sherwood came in and motivated Lambert's players until the new manager bounce lost it's effect.

Garde has had to come in to work with Sherwood's players.  A lot has been said about players not being his choice and it looks as though there was some direction given to him on players for the future but at the end of the day, he had the final say on players.  Sherwood failed to improve the glaring weaknesses (other than LB) and replace the key players that left.  The squad for this season was too weak and under prepared.

1. Which 3 players were sold?
Benteke, Delph and Weimann? Because if you're talking about Tom 4 decent games Cleverley he was on loan and chose another club. Alternatively you're talking about Vlaar he chose not to sign a new contract and has only just signed a short term contract with AZ Alkmaar which says a lot about the level he's expecting to reach.

2. How many managers have complete free reign these days? He's said countless times that he had final say. He could have refused any or all of them. He was only too happy to take credit for the signing policy before the season went to shit.

3. We'll have to disagree about the importance of the Southampton game. There was a shit of him after the 4th goal went in. The only time I've seen a similar facial expression in a sporting context was the first time Audley Harrison got hit by someone who meant it instead of a patsy.

"What the f##k was that? I don't like it, can someone make it stop?"

Nothing that came after that had any conviction or belief about it.

Sherwood trying to take anyone on in a battle of wits is rarely going to be a fair fight.

Koeman battered Wenger yesterday. It happens. The thing about the Southampton game for me was that Sherwood didn't learn anything or didn't accept his part in the defeat. It's something he does when things don't go his way and was ultimately his undoing.

My guess is that working for Sherwood would have been quite easy and fun for the players.  The emphasis being on fun as sherwood would be all too keen to be their mates.  I wonder whether this dynamic has been a reason why we have not seen a new manager bounce under Garde?  His more dour, yet intelligent and hardworking approach might have come as a shock to the players used to the easy street of Sherwood's regime.

I think you are absolutely right Dante. Lazy kids always love the teachers that let them doss.  For me the level of resentment towards a French manager and through him to French players by Sherwood's squad became blindingly clear by everything that happened at Spurs including the team selection. It was still alive and festering when our team captain Richards ahead of a vital game we lost dissed his (French) team mates in the Torygraph and on radio.

I think on a similar point when Kevin Mac was being considered  for the job post Spoilt Brat walkout, the fact the players liked him so much set alarm bells ringing for me.

Going down 3-2 to Leicester after being two up shattered our confidence this season and that can be blamed on Sherwood. Any decent manager would have strengthened the midfield but not that idiot. The team has never recovered from that, two brilliant goals and then it was allowed to turn to shit.

If true, it would be an interesting news article if one of the french players could be interviewed and the amateur-ness of Sherwood's leadership be exposed.  I don't generally agree with revenge but Garde, the French player and subsequently the Club have been on the back foot due to Sherwood's agenda and the media's willingness to print what he tells them.

Very true Rob. K Mac was a father figure to most of them but he was an indulgent father and Prem football is like life, hard, merciless and unforgiving. You need more from you Dad than a pat on the head and a bike at Christmas to prepare you for it.

The trouble with kids that go off the rails and are given in to, it takes a long time to correct.

Very true. And the bright kids that want to do their best have quite a bit of contempt for them.

Couldn't agree more.
Was saying exactly this to my mate on Boxing Day...how long has this easy-going, "the lads are a great bunch/like family", it'll all be ok, the lads were excellent stuff malaise been going on at VP? Gabby is the obvious, glaring example - has looked unfit, overweight, unprofessional for several years but no-one seems to have had a word!
Garde seems to have seen it and is addressing it...along with a number of previously overlooked glaring issues.
A change of culture of this nature will take some time!
