We conceded one goal against a team that cost 1/2 billion to assemble. I think Gary Neville the one eyed toerag should remember that. If he wants to be critical about us then our inability to create any real opportunities or take shots should be a much easier target. Or in fact something he won't do is criticize his former employers for being so fucking average two straight weeks despite how much they've spent not to be.

I just watched the Sky coverage of the game, and Neville's criticism was largely focused on wide set plays, where he said that our back 4 was a shambles, and that it would have to be sorted out. He said that nobody was organizing the back line.  He was quite vehement about it, from their very first free kick.

I must admit I did not see that at the game, and I was more concerned with midfielders loosing their runners, and forwards not getting into the box.

Neville is right, Richards conceded a free kick on our right and spent the walk back complaint instead of organising the defence.
Shambolic is the right word, they were all over the place.

Happened a couple of times later too... Defo summat to be worked on

Shambolic? This is a defence that has played together in serious competition twice. If it was shambolic, why didn't we concede 5? I'd reserve words like shambolic for when we do because using it when we concede once against a CL side and open that will competing for the title is nonsense.

I'd reserve the word shambolic for the likes of Sunderland's defence, not ours.

It's either 0 or 100 with some people isn't it? After keeping us up Sherwood was a genius, after losing the final he was an idiot; after Bournemouth, our defence was solid as a rock, after United it's a shambles. I thought Richards didn't do well for the goal, but short of Alessandro Nesta defenders will make mistakes, and it didn't help us that the player trying to take advantage was Juan Mata, rather than what's-his-name Pugh at Dean Court.

Yep I agree, McGrath was the only player capable of putting in perfect performances, and even he must of made the odd mistake
Richards had been very good in both games so far, a definite upgrade on Vlaar, and I liked Vlaar

I still think we struggle at times against movement from attackers. We were all over the place at times Friday, but we soon got a grip on it and Utd didn't really do much. Was that Sherwood sending a message, or Richards getting on top of his team mates? But at least we somewhat rectified those problems. We're never going to be a grind it out sort of side. When our attack clicks, that is what will get us more points. I don't think we'll concede the ludicrous amounts we have under Lambert and Sherwood last season. We won't have too many clean sheets.

But I think Sherwood is moving us in the right direction.

I didn't want him when he came, because I thought he was a lightweight. But he has mostly been a positive surprise. He kept us up (allthough most managers except Lambert would have managed that), and deserves time. And his signings have been more imaginative than I expected. But to be honest I expected him to sign Spurs' reserve side.

Our defence is awful. Clearly conceding 1 goal in 2 games is stuff of nightmares.

And look at Chelsea's defence: 5 goals conceded in 2 games! I can't believe some people are criticising our defence only 2 games in; it's going to take at least 10 or 12 games for the whole team to gel properly. Sherwood has had to bring in so many new players from different countries so close to the start of the season - they've had next to no time to bed in. Man City's messing around with the Sterling deal for so long certainly didn't help - once he'd left it triggered Benteke's departure. Though the worst disruption was Delph's actions.

I don't know how you live with yourself having viewpoints like that. That kind of rational perspective won't work around here sonny!

So far we have started the season a bit like last season. We have been quite compact, worked hard, played some solid if unremarkable football and looked to nick games by the odd goal.  Difference was then we had enough fire power to carry us through.  At this point I'm not sure the Manager knows his best team, but we will learn more after 10-12 games.

Last season we started with Gabby & Weimann up front. With kind of firepower I'm not sure we'd have been worrying the likes of Kidderminster.
