Good result and decent performance but room for improvement and some close shaves toward the end.

Will absolutely take 3 points though.

Did we just see a game out and look largely comfortable?

Impressive. Having experience in key positions makes all the difference.

Well done Paul, Roy and the lads. Great start with a depleted team.

Very much so Ger. very solid, wasteful but at least we created chances. Importantly we have some key pieces to come in who are all upgrades on the players that started today. Even Joe Cole can add something. Plus if we can get one more in, of genuine quality in midfield it will help immensely.

Very encouraging start indeed.

Well done Villa. Very professional.
Some very good performances, particularly from Cissohko, Vlaar and Delph.
Very impressed with all the debutants, and well done to Young Jack.

Onwards and upwards.

Really pleased - for the first time in a while we looked like a team

Aly looked very good as did all of the defence

I liked the way none of the players looked like they were shitting themselves with 20/25 to go, unlike myself and Villa over the last couple of seasons.
