Just watching the Sunderland game on MOD.  The first penalty if, as the commentator said was awarded for dangerous play then, the decision should have been an indirect free kick and not a penalty.  If the commentator was incorrect in his assumption and the referee decided it wasn't dangerous play then, the only reason he could award a penalty would be that he considered that the challenge was serious foul play which warrants a red card.  IMO. It was a genuine attempt by the Southampton player to play the ball but by virtue of the Sunderland player dropping his head and the player's foot being high it was no more than an indirect free kick for dangerous play.  If it had played out that way, Sunderland would only have gained one point and, life would be just that little bit easier for us.  On such little things...

Here is Dave's post about it. I'd better bump it, Dave will break the site if he tries to do it!

I'm pleased that Man City beat Spurs. It will keep Arsenal at it for the Hull game.

Ended 2-0 to Boca and now for blood bath in the streets of -Buenos Aires!

I've been to a Boca game - good fun with non stop noise but at times it feels like a pre-designed playlist that has bugger all to do with the game.

Because of JPA. I prefer River Plate. And Boca play in blue....
You lucky bugger. That game is on do list!

Glad Forest Green lost because:

(a) they refuse to sell meat at the stadium as the manager is a vegan fascist.

(b) they were the only team not to win on my fourteen team, 700-1 accumulator the other week.

Bastards. Hope they rot.

Me too John, got a fair few old friends who go to MK regularly.

Good day for our friends and family bud

Good luck to Preston in the play offs, Preston and Villa the original aristocrats of the game

If they had let me down on a 700/1 acca I reckon SKY news would have been broadcasting live from Gloucestershire and my wife would be on there making a tearful appeal to give myself up before anyone else got hurt. Although I might have got a free KFC* off Gazza.

*KFC. My kids would be so proud I am finally calling it by it's 'new' name. They always give me a strange look when I suggest getting a 'Kentucky'.

A friend of mine wants to get a Colonel Sanders tattoo. I think I might, finally, have talked him out of this mental idea by mentioning that people might think he's a really big fan of an Antipodeon sex pest known for singing "Two Little Boys".

My wife used to be a graphic designer. Two female friends have got her to design tattoos for them to take in to have done. A girl I worked with wanted a pig sitting on a bed tattooed on her lower back for some reason. My wife's mate got her to do a design of the female Tazmanian devil from the Looney Tunes cartoons smoking a spliff. For the best part of twenty years this has had pride of place on her upper tit for when she reveals her cleavage. She is the Banksy of breasts my wife.

Oh the shame, the shame!  I never noticed that (obviously) until now.  In my defence I think it was the last post on the previous page.  I do have previous though.

Has to be a penalty. If the Southampton lad kicks any other part of the attackers anatomy it is a foul and a pen. Why is it only an indirect for kicking him in the face?

Surely dangerous play is when there is no contact but the defender nevertheless put his opponent at risk of serious injury.

Personally I'd have sent Defoe off. He is a grade A twat.

Sorry Steve, I have to disagree.  The Southampton defender is making a genuine attempt to play the ball, his cause is not helped by the fact that the Sunderland player is lowering his head to head the ball which, if you want to take it to the nth degree can also be construed as dangerous play.

If, as you say it's a penalty because everything similar in other areas of the field of play results in direct free kicks then, basically the only indirect free-kick awarded throughout the game would be for offside.  It's all about interpreting the situation correctly and, as we saw in our game, referees don't always interpret flashpoint situations correctly.
