I always thought the argument for the Premier League being the best in the world was because most games are competitive. Most games are near capacity and even a side fighting to survive can beat one of the top sides. Whereas somewhere like Spain for example, Barca and Real walk over most teams in most games and only a handful of teams can attract a respectable crowd size.

People get hung up on their definition of 'best' thinking it means best quality.

To me it means best to watch, which the PL obviously is, as evidenced by its world-wide TV revenue.

Most watched doesn't mean best, it just means most popular. Unless of course because more people watch and listen to U2 it means they are better than the much less watched and listened to Paul Weller. *winky*

Everton score. They should make them KO without a goalie.

Europa League is the sort of thing both Everton and Spurs should target winning.  Both are still some way off being top four IMO, but this is a realistically trophy they can get in the bag.

Point taken on music, culture etc. but I think it's different with football. More competitive and entrrtaining trumps  better technique for me and, overwhelmingly, football watchers around the world.

It's what we should be targetting too.

Do the lights see brighter at the English grounds in European competitions or is it just me?

I think you were right with your original reply - it depends on a person's definition of 'best', which is going to vary from person to person. Best could mean the best technically, entertainment-wise, competitive-wise etc. The term on its own is too ambiguous which is why people can de-construct the comment.

But there are more competitive leagues (i.e. more teams can win the bloody thing) even in this country, and the definition of entertainment is purely personal. I often find games between two teams of no-hope cloggers in the Mercian League much more entertaining than almost anything I see in the Premier League for instance.

The reason so many people World-wide think the PL is the greatest league in the World is because they have been told that it is the greatest league in the World and the reason so many watch it is because it has been massively marketed to them to make money.

*EDIT FOR DISCLAIMER*
Obviously that comment isn't aimed at everyone, as I say, it's a personal thing. U2 sell out stadiums for fucks sake!

I think the Championship is as competitive a league as I can think of. As a betting man I have found that to my cost. It is also in the top five or six leagues in Europe for attendances isn't it?

QPR 1-1 Stoke

Diouf early in the game for Stoke, Caulker or maybe even an OG just before HT

Can't say I'm too interested in what goes on in *that* area of the table.  Sniff.
