Have to say I've always liked the 3-5-2 (5-3-2) formation.

It's a very adaptable formation, adding strength to the midfield or defence when needed. It, also, seems to suit us.

It looks good if we go on the front foot and try and attack. If we sit back unwilling to try to win a game, it's not pretty.
There's also an onus on 1-2 of your centerbacks to step up into midfield sometimes. Players like Vlaar and Clark are comfortable enough on the ball to do that, and managed it at times to day to keep us largely on the front foot.
I would imagine Okore could prove a particularly useful player if we adopt this system next season, because of his pace and comfort on the ball. He'll be able to step up to support midfield but have the pace to recover against counter attacks.

I agree, I think that's the same display we had against Norwich a couple of months ago and we won 4-1 ( with an in form Benteke though )

I understand 'shock' but why was the first goal lucky? Although Albie fresh-aired the first shot-opportunity it was well-worked and well taken.

And, the starting formation was 3-5-2 as far as I could see.

it did look a foul on their player when Gabby initially lost the ball. Then the miskick but with contact on it to keep it close enough for the prod to Westwood. I'm glad it fell to him though as he was the one player on the pitch I have confidence with to stroke it in from 20 yards into the corner at the time. (Delph would have been on the wrong foot.)

As for the starting formation. It looked like three at the back with two wingbacks but it was Marc who I couldn't place. It almost looked more like 3-4-3 or Marc playing behind the two strikers. It definitely caused us to struggle upto the goal and just after as Lowton was left facing two most times with Marc no where to be seen. Then we seemed to almost go 4-4-2 towards the end of the half with Albie on the wing and we got our two deserved goals and didn't really have a worry until we settled and allowed them to come onto us more.

First Villa goal, I would guess Atkinson. But not sure if it was the first goal though as the oppo might have scored first.

They got a good response. Their kids were cute and fair play to them for doing it.

One (1) person behind me tried to get an anti-Lambert chant going but the rest of us decided it wasn't the time or place.

1st Premier League game at VP was Villa vs Leeds Utd on the 19th August 1992, I believe. Game ended 1-1 and it was indeed Atkinson who scored.

Not sure whether Leeds or Villa scored first though.

Well done Somniloquism it was indeed Aitkinson against Leeds. Gary Speed scored to level things and thus became the first visiting player to score at Villa Park

A good, positive start set the tone. It took the pressure off us breaking them down and while there were subsequent lapses, we maintained the high energy approach. Job done, deserved it, glad it's over.

we were all singing old players songs and when we got to the "Theres only one Ian Taylor" it was noticed that he was in a box.

the Holte asked him to give us a wave which he did as well as standing up and waving to us.

it was a nice moment

I thought Mike Dean was going to give a foul when Gabby won the ball on the left wing, which led to the goal bang on one minute. On the basis that it was not a foul, but it was a Mike Dean at Villa Park.
