A friend recently told me that what is sometimes is known as American English is actually traditional English as exported back whenever, it is older than what we Englanders speak/ write. For example we used to use recognize rather than recognise. Not sure how true this is?

So how about Pat Murphy saying the takeover's still on and a deposit in an escrow account proves it, huh? Anyone who knows anything about that sort of thing willing to comment on whether that makes any sense?

I dislike Pat Murphy and regard him as an awful representive of the BBC. But he has no reason or motivation to invent things, thats not his style. Snide little potshots at our club & fans or his personal obsession with being snubbed by Lerner is more his bread and butter.

I see no reason to doubt the takeover is going just fine. Having funds in escrow as government/regulatory approvals are being processed is a perfectly normal way of buying a company (at least in the USA), as a minor note not applicable here it is also perfectly normal for a new investment or funding for an established company to be put in escrow while things are finalized (like other investors approving the new investment etc.).

I have been involved or more accurately companies I have been at have been involved (I am not rich) in several company purchases/investments. I have never seen funds fall out of escrow and the deal fall through at this stage. But I work in tech, not sports so maybe its different there.

Shrug. My 0.02c I think the takeover is going just fine.

Colour is spelled with a 'u'. Just saying.

Only if he's writing in British English.

Unless you're UK or one of the Commonwealth countries, you're probably taught American English these days, especially as a second language. I'm pretty sure from some of the his/her other posts, TB has previously alluded to English being a second language.

There is no such thing as American English. There is the Queen's English, and there are spelling mistakes.

That's the argument I ocassionally run into with the kid's schools too.

Alternatively, watch out, that sounds a bit like a Kipper / Daily Heil type.

There's a strong argument that you're half right but it's a bit more complicated.

The Victorians did alter some spellings to make the language look better in type but those changes didn't get adopted by the americans because they were independant.  That accounts for differences such as the s and z (unionised and unionized for example), z was used previously because it was easier to do.

The other major differences were down to an American general in about 1900 (I think, without looking it up I'm going by my slightly ropey memory) who decided that the language would be easier if it were more phonetic so he created a new dictionary where, amongst other changes, he removed all the silent characters.  Most of his changes were rejected pretty quickly and his dictionary disappeared within a couple of years but losing the u's stuck along with some others.  Other spellings that he changed have hung around as alternatives (nite is one and I'm fairly sure skool was as well).

If you go back far enough there's barely any such thing as English 'spelling' - for the Elizabethans it was still very much up for grabs.

Also, cheers for the response Ciggies! I'm feeling rather more positive about the Villa today, all told.

Are you thinking of Noah Webster ? An American lawyer/teacher/author who compiled the first American dictionary in the 1800's. You are correct on the history of the linguistic differences between English and American English...and it's funny to hear them savage place names, eg. Norwich = Nor-witch, Warwick = War-wick, Marlborough = Marl-burrow..grrrrr

That's the one, would've sworn he was an army general at some point but maybe I'm not remembering it right, I'm sure the army played a part in the reason for doing it, because of the number of young recruits who couldn't read or write. Iwas honest about the dates though, i just remember it as more recent than you'd expect.

Serves me right for ignoring the "200 posts have been posted since you started this" warning.

You can disable that, GJ. It used to annoy me no end!

I think I had a sheltered upbringing as a child. I was brought up as a God fearing bible believing Pentecostal and I was still extremely naive by the time I got to Uni. I distinctly remember when I was at school a boy in our class got told off for swearing and I went home and asked Mom if she'd teach me how to swear because I had no idea what it even was.

My Dad was a Pentecostal Pastor (AOG)

We were Elim, so AoG were the enemy (sort of.)

If your palm is open on your head then its an RAF or Army salute. If your palm is facing down then your giving a naval salute.
