I would say the barometer would be season ticket sales. If they're declining, the chances of getting fifty thousand cheesed off Villa fans to stump up three grand each is a non starter.

In an age where Norwich can play Watford and have it hyped as the clash of the decade, and both could earn hundreds of millions just for turning up for a season and being shit on telly, I don't think the idea of supporters putting in savings they probably haven't got as an article of faith has much potential.

I think it was Ebbsfleet who, for a period, had an online poll about which players the manager had to pick for each game. That's what we'd end up with, and we'd probably be in the same league as them at the time.
