Again, all of that ^^^ is fair enough, but I'd suggest none of it points towards progress made under Fox.
Well this transfer window is starting to shape up not too bad assuming we spend £9m on Gueye another £9m on a proper LB (assumption) and ward off evil spirits from Delphi and Tekkers

Four things there.

1. Sign Gueye for 9m - happening but not yet happened.
2. Spend 9m on another LB - not happened
3. Hold on to Benteke - it's only the start of July, not happened
4. Hold on to Delph - it's only the start of July, not happened.

So, really, even if you accept those as key ways of judging Fox, none of them have actually happened yet.

We won't make progress till we start spending big money on decent players. Staying in the PL by the skin of our teeth is not progress no matter what Tom Fox may do. It's money we need.

It's not just money though is it?

By that logic, allowing for inflation Curtis Davies should be 5-6 times the player Okore is and John Gregory should never have signed Mark Delaney who's probably the last decent right back I can remember despite the millions we've subsequently thrown at it.

It's about finding players that improve on what we've got that fit the budget we've got.

What would you say was a reasonable annual transfer budget for us, and at what fee does a player become decent?

I agree , it could still go either way. Would Micah Richards have joined us though without doing his own due diligence ? I know he's one of us but even so ?

Well it is money really. This 5 year slump we're in started with Lerner's austerity plan for the club. Basically we've signed mainly crap on the cheap for 5 years (with one or two exceptions) and the results are there to see. You get what you pay for in life and football is no different.

Like most things these days, the club must get their internal structure right, so you don't waste the little money that we have on useless players. I'm with Paulie on this. Nothing achieved so far other than 17th, Christ, a bare minimum for a club of our stature! Jeez, see what we've become?  The club now have to prove their words are not empty. Gueye signed, Amavi, Austin, Chery etc to follow and I might start to trust them again.

I think it's one of three things that are happening at Villa...
1) We're being sold and the players we're being linked with will be bought with cash from the new owners.
2) Lerner's staying and he realises he can't run the club on the cheap anymore so he's finally come to his senses and has ended this horrible era of austerity.
3) There's no buyer and we're going to rebuild the squad with the cash generated by the sales of Benteke and Delph.

I really hope it's one of the first 2.

You've not answered either of the questions, or explained why Curtis Davies wasn't a 4 x better centre half than Okore or why Mark Delaney, who we signed for peanuts, has probably been the best right back we've had in the last 20 years, despite the millions thrown at it.

Or maybe it's not just about the money?

My money is on 2.) With the horrible feeling Lerner will slowly tighten up finances again as time goes on and this is just the usual new manager backing Lerner (to his credit) gives during a managers first window, be it slightly bigger than normal because of the reduced wage bill and extra revenue.

I've been feeling a sense of dread since reading the last two posts. Can anyone make it go away?

Yes, with two words.

"Alan" and "Nixon".

Go in peace, my brother.

And that Randy isn't handling the sale.  Bank of America Merrill Lynch are....oh hang on

Mistakes can be made in times of wealth in the transfer market, but if you're constantly looking to the bargain basement for players you're gonna end up fighting at the wrong end of the table, and that's where we've been for 5 years now. As I said earlier, you get what you pay for in life.

As much as Lerner has made monumental fuck up after one another, I cannot hate or dislike the man. Ultimately he's one of us, yes born and raised in very different circumstances but bottom line is he's ploughed ££$$millions into the club he won't ever see again. I think he genuinely loves the club but he can't be here by personal circumstances .

My vote is that there is no takeover, Randy will step aside. The money we are spending is on anticipated sales, current profits from previous austerity, New sponsors/partnerships and the realisation that we cannot continue to be shit, so need to spend.
