An interesting listen with a sports business expert:

http://talksport.com/radio/listen-again/1431032400#

Click on the 00:30 - 01:00 segment.

Most interesting point was the analysts' forecast on the way broadcasting is heading. Where he hypothesises on-demand broadcasters like Lovefilm and all those have huge resources and will enter the fray and could be looking to provide on-demand services for Premier League clubs - potentially cutting Sky out. He continued that the likes of Kroenke are waiting for this and makes clubs like ourselves very attractive, especially having put our balance sheet in order and reduced the average age of the squad. The fact that we're only averaging 72% capacity in home games also shows that there's a lot of upside, especially with Sherwood having made us a lot more attractive to watch.

It's a joke that Villa and Albion have the same valuations.

I was ready to mock, but he was actually pretty insightful.

Cheers for the link.

I thought the same.  I've never heard Talksport do anything in that depth before.  Very insightful.

Clubs selling their own rights is only ever going to be a bad thing for Villa. The end of shared rights means the beginning of the end for any trace of competitiveness for most clubs.

Agreed, Man United and Liverpool would probably be the only clubs that it would benefit.
and honestly who wants to see that?

United can already spend more than any other club due to the financial fair play rules.

I think the main television deals would stay as they are but there's room for an added on-demand service where the rest of the games can be picked on a match-by-match basis. It's a way of legalising/replacing streaming sites and it's still not televising live 3pm games. There's a market for it and it's not replacing match-day experiences so it's not likely to have a big affect on attendances. It's another way for the Premier League and clubs to make more money so it's probably going to happen at some point.

I hope clubs keep negotiating as they have been, rather than a club-by-club basis as that would kill the game. They would only be shooting themselves in the foot because the Premier League is a cash machine and having Real/Barca negotiate individually has ruined clubs.

Am I right that randy has a massive amount of soft loans outstanding to the club?

What's the risk that he seeks to recoup a good chunk of that before leaving, from the increase in TV revenues or say a massive benteke fee?

Might depend on what he's having to cough up for his ex wife I suppose.
Randy converted all outstanding loans into equity in December 2013.  Whatever the sale price is, is what he walks away with.

I see direct rights as additive income not a replacement.

I am going to bang my drum about AVTV again. ChelseaTV right now allows you to watch the full games anytime you like. AVTV could do the same if they wanted, it just seems laziness on the clubs part that they do not, particularly given all the footage is available in AVTV format and already shown over here in the states on spanish TV.

Just the one simple thing of adding to AVTV's coverage full games instead of highlights would surely make the service more attractive to current fans and generate extra income.

Only in the minds of the residents of 6 toe county.

I'd subscribe. I cancelled my first subscription after they made a total balls up of the live matches.

What I'd like to see is full coverage of away games, I think that could really work without impacting on attendances.

Yup and it would increase overseas income. Its crazy how often we see posts here from folks  desperate to watch a game again and yet Villa who have got all the footage and commentary readily available simply decide not to show it and even worse decide to waste time making "highlights" instead. Just put the whole damn match up on your service!

How do you define away matches, though?

What about Villa fans who live in Manchester and want to watch our matches there? They'd be shown as living in Britain's ninth biggest city, and therefore would struggle to suggest it is an away match for them.

Plus I also think people are assuming you can introduce more coverage via streaming and not have it impact on the price the standard TV rights would fetch. That wouldn't be the case.
