I dont think Roma, or indeed anyone else in Italy, could get near the fee we would require for CB. Seems a bit of a cobbled together piece.

Roma and Juve have the money, as might Milan if Berlusconi is finally bought out, but the rebuilding jobs are very large and none of them could really spend that much (£30m+?) on a single player.

I dont follow Italian football much these days but whats changed, a TV deal or something? From memory I cant remember any Italian team paying upward of £20m for a player in the last few years, let alone the £30-35 I am presuming we'd want for CB.

Although thinking about it, I suppose Higuin wouldn't have come cheap.

If I remember rightly they've sold the TV rights to a few different Italian channels, reached saturation point and devalued the product, which isn't great anyway.

More detail to follow from somebody a bit more knowledgable.

Juve have tonnes of money, not least from the Champions League this year (the revenues of which they don't need to share with Roma, the other CL club, for both fair and unfair reasons). They're not signing CB, though - they're signing at least one of Dybala and Cavani, and possibly both, so strikers aren't on their agenda at the moment.

Roma are owned by a quite interesting bunch of Americans and their largest expenditure - the new stadium - doesn't come under FFP regulations so they can afford to spend on players. They could only reach the lower-ends of Benteke's worth, though (maybe £35-45m? Lambert may have a point about his worth), and to do that they'd have to a) sign no other players that summer and b) sell Pjanic, Nainggolan or both. So, they're unlikely to come in for him.

Just a line in the sand.

(To whoever Randy might sell us to. Not necessarily at the end of this season, either, as I can't believe he's not enjoying this, especially if we get the Cup as well. This warning could hopefully be relevant in several years' time.)

You will really enjoy it if you join us in making Aston Villa ever, ever greater.

And

Why wouldn't you?  Really?

UTV!

Any opportunist asset stripping is a complete waste of your resources and will be met with SAS type elimination of your principals, PR and finance as we are backed by The Royal Family, Tom Hanks and the Prime Minister.

I'm a bit concerned really, talk of an Albion takeover but nothing our end, Benteke being talked away and being linked with players from Bradford and Swindon, hope it's all a red herring

Mervyn King probably still has some influence too.

That's a bit like the guy at the Bentley dealership worrying about the guy round the corner having a couple of people looking at a 20 year old Ford Sierra.

True.
We should probably hold the inspirational talents of David Bradley and Benjamin Zephaniah in reserve, as well.

Apparently Robert Rich's (linked a while back) jet was at Southampton on Saturday. As was John De Mol's. From thetrees on Twitter

  • "I'm a believer mate" but only just.
The fact that prem status for next season is now guaranteed means that there can be no more fannying about on the takeover front.

The talks have gone on for long enough time to see some action.
