Listening to 'Talkshite' last night and they had a American journalist on talking all things 'soccer'. He said he had recently talked to Robert Kraft who owns the New England Patriots and New England Revolution. Kraft supposedly had said he had no interest whatsoever of buying a Premier League side as the relegation/promotion system concerned him. Meaning he wouldn't want to throw loads at a club and not have the guarantee of staying in the league.
That's us out then.

Whilst he's right, any sort of reasonable investmet should see you safe in the premier league.  What it cannot guarantee is Champions League.  The business model needs to be developed based on PL income and if (big if) you manage to squeeze into 4th at any point you use the extra as a spring board.

Yeah I was going to say, if you spend enough money you essentially guarantee that you won't be relegated.

I'll qualify that then, if you spend enough money on good players.

If the club is going to be bought with leaves, what do we do about falling values in Autumn?

Yeah I was going to say, if you spend enough money you essentially guarantee that you won't be relegated.

I think there was a time when that was true, but a quick glance at the amounts that QPR, Norwich and Fulham have all spent in recent years illustrates that that is no longer the case. Most clubs in the topflight now have access to significant funds, either through a rich billionaire owner, the new TV deal or both.

What that generally means is that individual clubs aren't necessarily improving, it's just that more money is going to average players.

In the case of QPR, Norwich and Fulham, there were other factors that contributed to their relegation.  As there were three worse teams/ squads than theirs in the seasons when they went down.

A measure of how rich you have to be to own a club is the fact that the Wellesley restaurant where my younger son met Randy Lerner was in the papers yesterday for charging £75 for three small bottles of water. Different world.

If that is the place on Knightsbridge then I have been there a couple of times meeting my Saffer in-laws who stay there. They always insist on picking up the bar bill thankfully.

There was a minimum fee per person of £25, which pushed the cost up by £50. The lengths they will go to to keep the riff raff out

Football is going to kill itself unless something is done about the number of teams that get promoted/relegated each season.  It makes for 'interesting' ends to the season but too many teams are going down with high expenditure/debt for it to be healthy for the game.  There is too much fear in the PL for probably ten teams each year and this is leading to buying players rather than blooding youngsters.

For investment, there needs to be more stability and I would advocate a reduction to 2 teams relegated and then 1 team and 1 into a play off with the Championship clubs.
