not that I am disagreeing entirely with his article, but clubs like Sevilla, Atletico Madrid, Wigan, Swansea to name a few has shown you don't need to spend like Chelsea or Barcelona to be competitive or win trophies. If we found an owner even of Lerner's level financially but motivated to invest in line with PL revenues which keep on growing then most of us would be just fine. It would be great to think that competing with Man City was just around the corner with the right investment, but I'd take competing with Newcastle or Everton as stepping stone. You don't need to be Sheik Mansoor to do that.

Yes, it is possible to build something year on year and gradually catch up with modest, but sustained spending.  The problem is that fans are now too impatient and want success yesterday.

It would still be virtually impossible for any club to challenge the "big clubs" by gradual, sustained modest spending, without having their best players cherry picked by those clubs that are now nicely cemented in the top positions by Platini's little ruse.

Financial Fair Play. Nothing could be further from reality.

Whilst the odds are definitely stacked in your favour I still cling to the hope that we can do an Dortmund (remember Bayern had to bail them out with a loan a few years ago), Athletico Madrid (albeit not yet sustained), Tottenham/Arsenal (neither spend beyond their income), Udinese (have track record of punching above their weight).

I'll be the first to admit that these clubs are the exceptions but if we solely believe the alternative we might as well give up.  Or start supporting Madrid.

I don't know if randy staying would be a good thing or a bad thing, depends on how he's going to play it

I don't disagree with what you are saying, it's just that the odds have got even longer than they were before, virtually guaranteeing that the rich clubs will now occupy permanent positions at the top of the league.

If Lerner stays I fear he has already made a monumental fuck up.
I presume he did not sack Lambert months ago purely because he expected the new owners would do the deed.

If he Lerner stays, so does Lambert.

I could just about go with Randy and Lambert as a permanent arrangement. Better the devil you know. Anything would be better than the current vacuum.
