If he'd left the debt there, anyone wanting to buy the business would have had to repay the debt, or the club would have had to do so under his ownership eventually. He has effectively chalked it off.

  If you look at the valuation Lerner is placing on the club, according to reports, versus the price he paid for Villa in the first place he is effectively loading much of the debt into the sale.

  Isn't Rob Harris the guitarist from Jamiroquai?  What the chuffing hell does he know about the sale of Villa?

The LA Clippers just sold for $2bn. A team that was a force sale because the former owner got kicked out of the league. It means that there were other billionaires that didn't bid enough. At £250m, Aston Villa is cheap. There are lots of rich people out there looking to buy sports teams and especially ones in such a high profile sport in arguably the most high profile league in the world.

I did read a while back someone being fairly concerned with the charge backs to associated entities at that time.

I think that most people accept that Randy was not in this to make money, I would also guess he didn't expect things to turn out as bad as they have financially.
