I never understood the stick they both used to get. When you watch the goals from that era one or the other is involved in a lot of them. Charles especially used to get hammered, which was especially unfair after that terrible injury he had.

Same premise though, the majority of width and attacking play comes from your full/wing backs. Their primary job is still as defenders.

You're right but they could always a centreback behind them to mop up any mistakes they made on one of their many attacks.
I always liked playing 5 at the back. Nothing better than seeing wingbacks flying down the wings whipping in crosses. One of the main things I dislike about Lambert's Villa is our lack of width. We play so narrow.

5-3-2, or variations of it, actually felt to me like it was 'our' system, if that makes sense, something on which we could have built an footballing identity.

Maybe it's because I was growing up watching first Taylor's team, then Little's, but it seemed to suit us.

You couldn't be more wrong with that last comment - http://www.whoscored.com/Regions/252/Tournaments/2/Seasons/4311/Stages/9155/TeamStatistics/England-Premier-League-2014-2015 - check the chart at the bottom of the page, the only side in the league that attacks down the wings more than we do is Leicester.

The issue is that we're so poor attacking through the middle that teams overload us out wide and we don't have the space that the better balanced sides do.

Great stats analysis.
God, the first table really does make for depressing reading. We really are shit, aren't we!
I wonder whether Lambert actually 'gets' any of this. His tactics / actions would suggest not.

Charles in particular was really suited to the wing-back role.  Looking back, the wing-back options of Charles, Nelson, Wright and Staunton at the time were pretty strong.

Right well the last five weeks have been excused because we played the top five from last year, how about now? We've just played a truly awful side in QPR and have been dire again. We've defended awfully and shown fuck all guile going forward. Truly embarrassing and compounded by making the same mistakes again and again. Why isn't Okore given a chance? why doesn't Grealish get a chance?

Yet another result to the 'he should have been sacked after.....' list.

Worst manager we've ever had?

How many more last straws? How many more last chances? How many more 'worst ever' records?

Just fuck off.

Quite.

After our record defeat, after getting humped time and time again by lower division sides in the cup, after dismal home records, add to that not scoring once in five straight defeats.  Truly abysmal.

I have never bought that argument about us playing badly because its against the top 5

Ive watched games this season, leicester v Man U, WHU at the weekend, Leicester at Chelsea, QPR v Liverpool, where the underdog has had a real go. Maybe not won, but given their best. We give up before we have started.

Tonight says it all. There is a disease that runs through our club from top to bottom. Not sure exactly what it is, or what the cure is. But we need a solution and quick. I dont think the squad is as bad as our results suggest, so it comes down to the manager, his staff and training methods etc. its going to end in tears. Not Lamberts because he will have his big pay off

Time for him to go - trouble is, look at Lerner's record of managerial appointments.
We need a manager that has a footballing philosophy and clear direction; some charisma and motivational nous. This guy has all the focus, charisma and direction of a piece of wood.

Time to go, Lambert.

No goals in 5 is embarrassing whoever you're playing. I can't think of anyone who has done as badly at a club as Lambert and been rewarded so richly.
