So he's guided us to an 8-0 defeat and losses to sides from all 3 lower divisions but he doesn't get as much stick as McLeish for reasons like that? I used to think the Small Heath thing was a media lie but the longer people give Lambert such an easy ride the more I wonder.

You could have bought Wigan Athletic for five million quid.

Why climb Everest when you can look at the top from Google images?

The man can do what he wants, his prerogative. It takes more bottle to do the former of those activities though. The later contains infinitely less risk, but none of the glory.

Are you winding us up?

This whole 'Martinez lacked the bottle' argument being developed is so irrelevant.  How many good managers would have taken a job under those circumstances? It goes back to the peanuts and monkeys argument. Bottle doesn't come into it. if I turn down a job that won't get me to where I want to be in my career, i.e successful, it's not because I lack bottle. It's because I know a job with better working conditions would be worth the wait.

I doubt it was that much.

If it was much less, Villa would have paid it. They paid around UKP 3 million for TSM!

It takes bottle and ego to believe you have it within you to sort out and put Aston Villa back to where it's historically accustomed to being, when he situation financially is unique amongst all 20 clubs.

Not many could do it, maybe nobody can.  You wouldn't take it because you lack bottle and self belief. Maybe Martinez did too? Or maybe it's because we wouldn't pay the mythical £5 million? It's all history now.

Maybe he didn't want to come, which was probably the main reason. It's not always about money.

It's a hard job to take on. I don't blame him for protecting his image/brand by taking an easier job.

'He lacked the bottle' seems to me a euphemism for 'we didn't make a good enough offer'. I'm sure he lacked the bottle to try and take Rochdale to the Champions' League as well.

You've got one of the biggest clubs in the country, but you have to get all Geroge Osbourne on it for at least two seasons and cut to the bone. Tempting and terrifying. O'Neill certainly lacked the bottle, maybe I am being harsh on Martinez.
