I've still got the programme for that Boro game, I think Alan Kerngahan is on the front. Stuart Gray scored for us to take it into extra time then we let in two. It was a long journey home.

Lost 5-0 at home in front of less than 4,500. Felt like I had the Holte to myself it was so empty. I was on the dole and living in Bromsgrove at the time. Spent over a weeks dole money getting to the game. Which including a two hour walk to Bromsgrove train station from my house, and a two hour walk back at stupid o'clock. For anyone who knows Bromsgrove, think where the train station is, and then where the Park Gate pub is/was (I assume it is still there) on the Kiddy Road as I lived near there. I spent most of the walk home swearing i'd never go again. I hated Villa that night!

I can't recall that game at all- were we playing a weakened team or our 1st team?

I remember going up to Ayresome Park when we were in the second division. Bleak. We were in an uncovered corner of a half empty ground

Although the old barrel-roofed main stand was fantastic

And there were about 300 of us there, absolutely maximum. Valentine's day 1988

I was living in Newcastle and had a ticket for the game but didn't make it past my front door. An afternoon on Teeside with a stinking hangover and the threat of getting my head kicked in kind of put me off. And a lady, success at last. Not Michelle Gill though.

I remember us being beaten 5-0 by them but I can't remember if I was at the game or not.

Looked up the Villa team: Spink, Gage, Gallacher, Lillis, Sims, McInally, Birch, Shaw, Thompson, Blair, Walters. Scarily, that was close to our first 11.

Had a look for that Boro programme earllier and came across this.

Nick Owen's Blackmail corner amused me.

Bloody hell you lot are like the boring sixth formers from school who were always quoting Monty Python.

Shut up and tell me the answer.

What, shut up and tell you the answer?

I think that was the first away game we went to after switching from the travellers club to premier entertainments. I went to Ayresome Park the following season too after we both got promoted. One or possibly even both of those games was a 3-3 draw.

I was at that game on Valentines Day, it was a Sunday I think. We lost 2.1, from memory Bruno for us and Bernie Slaven with both of theirs after we went ahead.

My abiding memory is coming out of the ground and it seemed the whole of Middlesbrough was waiting outside with malice aforethought.

The trip back was a bit chilly with the back window of the bus broken.

It is coming back to me now bit by bit. Didn't go to the game in early '88 but went with Premier for the first time for the top flight flight game towards the end of '88 which was a 3-3 draw. The first game we lost to two late goals I think. Shown live on ITV.

The one I went to was a second division game but shown live on TV. I think we were first and second in the table at the time, or maybe second and third thinking about it as Millwall led pretty much from Xmas, I think.
