But both Barry and Milner (probably) were available. With these two we'd expect to pushing the top 6. Would that have been a more expensive option over (say) 3 years than the players we've bought in who are no better than those that scraped through last season.?

That's the most worrying thing, his substitutions very rarely cause a positive change for the team.We had plenty of possession in Everton's final 3rd in the second half without creating much. Can't really see why you'd criticise Lambert on trying something different. Also there were quite a few on here last week that wanted Helenius and Benteke up front.Because what he tried has failed repeatedly, if you don't have supply there's nothing the forwards can do.[/quoteI agree - as I have said elsewhere the midfield is the real problem. But, in the context of the game and his options on the bench I couldn't really see he had any other choice.

His positioning is terrible- Vlaar is looking good- How about getting Lowton back in and have Bacuna as a right midfielder and Tonev on the left ? and then have Gabby and Benteke up front against West Ham. Meaning Weimann on the bench, he needs to be dropped/rested. Or Gabby on the left and then Sylla as an extra midfielderhey , you talk sense. you want to take Lamberts place Give him till Christmas first ;-) Then I will consider it !...and buy some bloody quality players - creative midfielder first

I think we could have done with getting Barry in over the summer, I know this is with hindsight but we need an old head in the middle to replace Stan Petrov. Of course this goes against PL's policy but he showed his value today and it sounds like he wanted to come back to the Villa. Still think we will be ok.
On a different point, how shite were the Everton fans? Knit yoghurt for 70 minutes, oh we've scored? They are right on a par for shit fans for good numbers like their bobble hatted, Norwegian, day tripping neighbours. No wonder their derbies are a sickening mutual masturbation, "sit by me 'ere lid in the wrong end with yer shert on" affair.
I think we need to put cut throat razors away for now. Everton have been very good this season yet we should have been 3-1 up going in at half time. From start of second to about 60th minute the ball never left their half. Possession and pressure from us and that yielded number of corners but sadly no end product. The first time they open our defence they scored. A real sucker punch and they are second in the table and we hover above relegation yet no one watching that match would have ranked the teams that way. This is a win to Eveton just like last season but no way it can be compared to that performance wise.We do need to look at contribution of some regulars but for now let's not rip ourselves apart because luck deserted us today.

Sadly we're looking in the bargain basement these days and our one and only luxury is Benteke.
