It's the World Cup that means we hold the cards, not the contract.

We could have him on a 10 year contract in the summer it will not make a difference to the end result. We will just get a lot more money
That is a difference to the end result isn't it?

I was tempted to edit it after I posted to define what I meant more clearly, but you know what I mean, in that Benteke will leave. It was definitely a stroke of genius financially (I should imagine) getting him to agree a new contract.

Do I believe he would have stayed if the World Cup was not round the corner? No. I could be completely wrong mind, but I don't have that much faith in players unfortunately, and that is all it is based on. Who wouldn't leave for a sufficiently increased wage? Increased wage and potentially not play, therefore decrease your chance to play in the World Cup? The answer's not so clear. Again though, basing it on nothing, just what I feel.

If only footballer's contracts were worth the paper they are printed on.
So why didn't Barry move to Liverpool?

Here are FSW's views:

So because we wouldn't release him from the contract that he's signed with us?
Ridiculous question in the first place.

It would probably seem that way if you don't understand that the length of time left on a footballer's contract is directly related to the likelihood of his club to choose whether or not to sell him.

I don't get what's so hard to understand. It is still the choice of the club to sell that player while under contract. Even if the player goes on strike it really makes no difference as it relates to the contract. The club still hold the cards. Now as that contract runs down the club might choose to offer new terms or cash in before the player becomes a free agent. But there is nothing a player can do to break that contract without the clubs consent. Same in reverse. Villa would love to sell Hutton but he doesn't have to go while under the current contract. Just because it is shit for Villa makes no difference to the player who is entitled to it.

I understand it perfectly well without you pair spelling it out. I hope Benteke stays, being one who stuck up for him from the start and one who didn't keep bleating about him missing sitters, and hope to see him scoring many more goals but I think someone will come in with a big offer and he will be gone.

but that rule applies to every player on the planet and has nothing to do with his contract. Any club can make a huge bid, the contract means we don't have to sell which you suggested doesn't matter and is factually incorrect. And as for backing him, I can speak for myself and say I'm no different to you in that regard.

Money will talk and always has done. Just hope we don't settle on anything less than £40m.

A football club is not about Trust members, or anyone else who happens to pay to be associated with any other sort of affiliation, it is about supporters, ( I am not an active one now due to location in money matters, but still 100 % Villa heart and body) so when the club holds a meeting with any form of support for that club, it should be a 100% open and reported on. This club belongs to all of us not just a precious few who happen to belong to this arm or the other.
The club has an official speaking about a club and he is honest and open, he should be that whether there are 100 or 20000 there, what is there to hide that we all cannot know.

I've just realised that the location thing defines your username.

I thought you were pb av fuckwit.

Sorry.

Great to read that the books are finally balanced and lessons have been learnt all round.

Indeed, I found the notes of the meeting with mr faulkner both refreshing and encouraging - all looking well for the future .
