I do think that Bennett could potentially be a really good option as the wide left of our front three. He's got an excellent left foot, and Weimann needs to be dropped and Gabby shifted to the right.

I see him as left side midfielder in a midfield 4 but certainly not as one of our front three.

Managers need to use substitute wisely as first two can be used for tactics and last one should be kept until after 75th minutes for injuries/tired player.

Could he have produced less that Weimann yesterday? I doubt it. Another option at home would be to play Helenius or Tonev in a role behind Benteke and Gabby, and try and drop into space between the opposition defence and midfield.

That was truly dreadful, no better than the first half abomination against Liverpool and once again confirmed my fears that Lambert doesn't have a plan B or anything else up his sleeve

Exactly how bad have Weimann, Lowton and Westwood (to name but three) got to perform before they get dropped ?. They're all massively out of form and should not be starting at the moment. Last season was last season, they should be in or out of the team this season based on what they're doing now

The only player i'd give any credit to yesterday was Delph, and he's still more graft than guile

If, as i suspect our plan B really is replace a midfielder with a striker and lump it then another long season is on the cards yet again.

Where is the style and the will to play football ?. The only time we look half threatening is when we go at teams with some pace/verve, because when we slow things down we're dreadful.

Lowton looks all over the shop this season, on one hand i'm thinking it's because he's expected to be in tow places at once, if he's not bombing up the wing to add some much needed width folks moan, then when he does and we lose possession leaving a huge gap in defence they also moan. Is he really expected to teleport between the two with no one else doing or covering either ?

WHERE IS THE WIDTH ?, WHAT ARE GABBY/WEIMANN DOING ON THAT SCORE ?

WHY ARE WE PLAYING THREE MIDFIELDERS ALL OF WHICH LOOK HAPPY TO SPEND THE ENTIRE GAME IN THE MIDDLE THIRD OF THE PITCH WITHOUT MOVING ?

Where is the football ???

Pah

I was disappointed with yesterday's game we need to learn from it and make sure it doesn't happen again.

After a bottle of wine and a nice meal my seething anger has subsided to....seething anger.
It is a clear case of Groundhog Day as we have a slight change in personnel but the same shit results.
We still cannot defend, and try to pass the ball through impossibly tight areas, we play a sort of franic football with no cohesion, sort of of the cuff where one touch can be a touch of genius or disaster.
Too much play in the centre of midfield, no width (one cross from Lowton caused Mayhem...why not get players wider and stretch the pitch in tight games such as this.
Defending? If i see Ron Vlarr try another drag-back in his own penalty area I think I'll expolde, too many players of the same 'type' in midfield, and a soft touch at home, I think we are in for another world of pain on that show fellow Villains.
Their no. 7 Sissoko continued a recent trend of 'doubling up' on Benteke, rendering him, and therefore Villa, innefecive, and we must find a way around this if we ony have a one-man threat other players like Gabby must come to the party.
And what happened to Lowton today ? A truly shocking performance, and Weimann looks poor so far, we have options now so Mr Lambert you will have to earn your corn and change things around.

Exactly this. All or nothing million-mile-an-hour stuff. Either comes off or more likely results in poor ball retention and frustration for supporters.

We have shopped at Aldi and expect them to turn up like something from Selfridges. It doesnt work.

The funniest thing yesterday was Ben Arfa running at Clark and the latter back pedalling. Ben Arfa then slowed down and Clark just kept going backward meaning the distance between them was even greater. Crazy.

Easy to blame Lambert but the players need to take some responsibility. For example, Gabby being in centre midfield the last 10 mins when we were crying out for some width

We were quite effective attack wise last season during the tail end. Benteke was on fire, Gabby and Wiemmann chipped in too.

Here's my worry...

Have we been worked out? Just like O Leary after a good first season, or Brian Little after two good seasons. I mean we had a set way of playing but didn't have the ability to switch things round too much with a plan B.

The trouble we have with Lambert is, his plan A, which took him half a season to find, is only partly effective. Our form from Jan was mid-table-ish. Now I worry that teams can soak our attack more effectively, and hit us on the counter attack with full efficiency. Any quick diagonal ball on the counter, opens us up like a can of Tuna.

So what we have now is a big problem. We're struggling, badly, to create chances (how many shots on target in 2 home games? I'll wager no more than 5) and only Benteke looks capable of putting them away. And what about when Benteke forgets his shooting boots, as he did against Liverpool?

That leaves us with an inability to score and a crippling inability to defend. What can we do to change it with our personel? Will Lambert do anything? For better or worse the guy sticks to his guns.

As for width. Last season we started scoring more goals by using the width of the pitch. A lot of our goals, you'd notice came from wider positions. So why we've become so narrowed, I don't know.

It's no good us always going back to the old "we need to learn from this" line. The frustrating thing is, we never do.

I've always wondered this, and why players seem incapable of thinking for themselves. If they're waiting for management instructions, but not getting it, there's a problem.
The fact we did nothing all fucking game to try and combat Ben Arfa was utterly pathetic. I mean almost Bradford levels of ineptitude. We gave him the freedom of the park, and I'm surprised we didn't send a waiter out with a glass of champagne in the middle of the game to make him feel more comfortable.

I think to be fair Delph tries to get forward and isn't happy to just sit in the middle.
