Patrick Roberts going to Citeh from Fulham for £11 million sums up how much the loyal Delph mugged us off.
He didn't. He gave us £8m when he didn't need to sign a new contract. Villa were complicit in agreeing the buyout.
Delph is guilty of making false statements about his intentions and commitments - in January and again last Saturday. He's an arse for shooting his mouth off so insincerely.
We're well rid of him and should just move on.

I love the idea that Delph gave us something for nothing. I'm pretty sure he got a significant wage increase and signing fee in exchange for a release clause that wouldn't trouble any top half club.
Sure, and he could still have left for nothing and got a great signing-on fee.
Who knows what really happened - the point is: the club were complicit, so let's just move on.

Complicit or not it doesn't excuse Delph. I'm 100% certain the club didn't put that clause in the contract. They were basically over the barrel.

Root cause is we needed Delph more than he needed us hence the stupid release clause.
All we can do now is learn and move on, build a squad , deep with quality and this shit won't happen again.

It looks very much like the club and Delph were making sure he didn't leave for nothing, but basically, an 8m release fee means the club can't stop him moving wherever he wants to go, it is so low.

That's why I think the club were naive to make such a big hoo-haa. Had we known about that clause at that price when he signed his new contract, how do we think our reaction would have been different?

The club were right to agree to the deal. He'd have left anyway had they not.

What they shouldn't have done was act as if it meant he was going to stay. It clearly wasn't

If we had known in January we would have laughed at the video as the cynical attempt as the "feel good" attempt it was
One thing Villa fans can do is recognise a potential balls-up!

Why is this thread still open?
Because it's a subject that Villa fans might want to discuss?

By the time that video had gone out (pre game v Bournemouth) , fox was already courting sherwood (spotted at B6 together at either the palace 0-0 or the sunderland 0-0 over Xmas ) .
Not sure that's any relevance other than to say , the club was very unstable, CEO meeting potential new manager whilst incumbent and team was floundering spectacularly .
It's just a catalogue of bad decisions for years is all I can see.

What a total non sequitur.

I'm not sure that I'm too bother about Delph leaving. He was voted best player last season, but that says more about the composition. I'm pretty sure I saw him having more than a handful of mediocre to poor performance, including the cup final where his passing suggested that he played for Arsenal. A decent mid-table side (which is perhaps what we'll hope to be next season) needs their best player to better than Delph was last season.

He has potential, and he can make things happen. For England it's probably a shame that he is going to Citeh, as their record for getting the best out of players are pretty bad. But fortunately he can still improve his game when he's off to Everton in a couple of seasons.

I suppose where we went wrong, and it's easy to say with hindsight, is that when Sherwood came in and Delph was made captain, we should have tried to get the value increased as things were looking good.

In terms of chronology it's relevant. The time of the deal, the place we were in as a club. The thinking of the CEO, The crime scene as it were.

He is, but sadly it can be said about a lot of clubs now. Just listening to a football show where they were discussing release clauses and how much more prevalent they were becoming in the game. It's a massive win for the agents who then go leaking it and the club ultimately is the one that suffers with players becoming unsettled and how it impacts the other players.

I understand from Delph's position why his camp insisted on it. I can understand why Villa accepted it. £8m isn't to be sniffed at when the owner has lost what he has. I can even go as far as to understand the proclamation of love at a time we needed some. What happened after off course is the lie on top of the original lie that is hardest to stomach.

It's nice to see a fair article in the mainstream press, rather than this drivel that we should be happy with £8 million.
