Not sure why I keep hearing that Vlaar should have been sent off. I think there's a danger of people calling for or expecting cards after every foul. He attempted a tackle, missed and made contact with the player. There was no raised foot, no body check, no malice or unreasonable force. Why then should it have been a yellow card?

I did not think it was a yellow card but was suprised it was not given .

Strange and wrong statistic on the BBC site

Quote
It was Arsenal's first home defeat on the season's opening day in 20 years and only Villa's third victory in 28 trips to the Gunners.

Or only their third win in six trips to the gunners to put it another way.

I saw that too, I can think of at least five wins in the last 20 years.

We won there in 89 and  1990 and in the league cup in 93/94 as well as 5 times in the premiership since 93 so theres at least 8 wins at arsenal in the last 24 years .

No idea where they get 3 wins in 28 trips to arsenal from?.

Having now seen the MOTD analysis, I think that the Ref made the correct decision for the second penalty but for the wrong reasons. It took a third angle and slow-mo to show that the defender's knee touched Gabby's back leg before his front foot touched the ball. I have my doubts that the Ref actually saw that.

It was still a penalty even if his knee hasn't caught him.

If you're going to make tackles like that in the box, you've got to make sure you win the ball cleanly which he didn't.

I think the Ref was looking from right behind so was more likely to have seen that than the leading leg.

Big thanks to son number 2, wasn't going to bother watching yesterday but he got it up on the laptop and it would have been wrong to leave him on his own. It's definitely raised my interest and expectations for the new season.

So impressed with the energy of the side, especially the midfield ,and the constant pressing .
Particularly the moment  in the first half when Wilshere was caught in possession by Delph  with KEA also breathing down his neck and then the subsequent bleating from Wilshere and Wenger. Lots of other similar incidents, how our midfield missed the hard working ,hard tackling Bannan....not.

The Long Sunday Morning run complete, mild hangover disappeared, stuffed after rather large brunch, the sun is shining.

But more, much more than this we beat The Arse 3-1. Fantastic effort - even had an unpromted grudging text from my Nose mate saying it was a great win.
