Cup attendances always take a hit as not included in the season tickets obviously.

Our attendances go up when the team improves on the pitch. It's always been like that at the Villa.

No they don't, and no it hasn't.

Our attendances often seem to go up in the second half of the season regardless of how we are doing.

Yes they do, and yes it has.

I'm not in court, Dave.
Even when I was a kid in the 70s and 80s if the Villa went on a winning run the attendances would improve. We turn up when there's a team to support. We'll always have a hard core, for sure, but we've also got a element of support that come back when the times are good and go away again when it goes tits up.

Except that our crowds sometimes go up when we're winning, sometimes go down. Sometimes they go up because of other factors, and sometimes they don't. Check our averages over any reasonably lengthy period for proof.

How does that correlate with the two huge crowds at VP in the last two home games despite us actually being a bit shit all season?

QPR was like a cup final, I think the attendences seem to go up when were doing well, the average gate went up under him and dropped a bit after he left, problem is football isn't cheap and when were doing badly it seems like a lot to part with £30-£40 a game when I can watch it in the pub and spend £10-£15, sad but true

I would imagine there's a fairly strong correlation between success and average crowds across a season.  A few minutes with Excel would show this one way or the other.

There are all sorts of factors which rank higher than ticket prices in driving attendances - current performance of the team, feel good factor about future prospects, style of play, perceived quality of the opposition, importance of the game, the profile of the players involved, etc, etc.

As far as I can tell it's pretty random.

1985 we stayed up, 1986 we went down but had a higher average.
1990 we finished 2nd, 1991 we finished 17th and att were slightly higher
1996 was a lower average than last year. And will probably be lower than this year.
Our lowest averages in the last 15 years were 2000 and 2001. We finished 6th and 8th and made an FA Cup final.

Of course success on the pitch helps crowds but it's not the only thing.

Were there not stands being rebuilt around then?

Not even Doug took 2 years to build a new stand.
