reminiscing about oldham
« on: February 16, 2013, 07:35:19 PM »
why did we play them 6th march in the quarter final? it was a wednesday for certain. how come not on the saturday? this season was one where i didnt miss a game home or away and thus bollocked up my accountancy study at college. i used to get wednesday afternoons off to go to college. i didnt last too long when the results came back and my attendance record lol, but what a wonderful season.
1992-93. my girlfriend, now wife, was at uni in preston. i had a suspension from the midland combination and took her to the game as i was up north. 24th november, 1-1, dalian atkinson. i just mentioned it to her and she just said 'i cant ever remember being as cold as i was that day'
not exactly sliding doors but oldham has definitely had an effect on my life!

The 1990 cup quarter final was played midweek because Oldham's 5th round tie with Everton went to a second replay at Oldham's on qtr final Saturday, which was eventually settled by a penalty late into extra time. We didn't know whether we'd be going to Oldham or Goodison on the Wednesday and were delighted it was Oldham, thinking we'd get past them!

Weirdly my overriding memory of that cup game was being in the chippy just up from the ground and seeing a Villa fan having the most hilarious Basil Fawlty like outburst when the guy behind the counter poured gravy on his chips!

It was the only game I missed from Christmas that season, because I was playing in the City Cup semi final at The Maypole for Park Hall against Edmund Campion.

We lost 4-0.

It was probaly the shittest day of my 13 years to that point.

Went to Oldham away in 1993, 1-1 draw but we really should have won. Halle goal, Saunders equalizer, Whittingham goal ruled out and lots of chances missed.

Our visits to Oldham in the early 90's were a catalogue of missed opportunities. The one that stuck out for me was the 3-2 defeat in 91-92 where Atkinson missed about 4 one on ones with the keeper and we lost in the last minute to a Roger Palmer goal from a corner! Some things never change!

I went the year before, and it was the same story, but we didn't get there till half time because of traffic and getting lost in Oldham.

I went to that too.I remember Mark Blake playing really well in that game, and it was the last season that the away end was the open terrace.

I think Blake scored as well and you're right it was the last time as a terrace.

Which was the season when Saunders came out to warm up in an oversized pair of timberland boots? I seem to recall it causing much hilarity in the away end.

FA Cup QF 1990. It was my birthday so we were all set for a great night in what was turning into a great season. I think we were two down at half time and an early third in the second half prompted a mass exodus from the terrace, including, and this is the only thing that makes me smile about that night, my mate who had only got into the ground at half time because he couldn't get off work early enough. In fact he probably spent around 15 mintues in the ground in total.

Chris Price scored a catastrophic own goal and it was windy and cold. Horrible night.

I vaguely remember from the telly him slicing a standard clearance into the top corner.

I remember the M6 being gridlock on the way up - it took forever to get there.  In fact,. my brother, who had left work about an hour after we set off, arrived about the same time...having driven a large part of the way in the hard shoulder with his hazard lights flashing.  Needs must and all that.

We walked out after the 3rd went in thinking at least we'll beat the traffic and be home at a decent time.
Got to the car and found we'd been blocked in FFS !
Ended up sitting there for a good half an hour listening to the game on 5 live

Price had a nightmare that night. I remember the announcement on the pa for coach drivers to return to their coaches with about half an hour still to play.
