I remember thinking the same thing.

The move for Sir Dennis's goal was simple but perfectly executed. The goal is still one of my favourites at Villa Park & the game one of my personal Villa Park highlights.

Wonderful footage from a wonderful time.
To use today's language, it seems to me that that team 'owned' Villa park. They belonged there, it was their home.
I just don't get that feeling from today's lot.

I was in the Merchant Navy at the time, so I missed a lot of that season, unfortunately. I remember I was in the Gulf when this game was played, and listening to second half commentary on the BBC World Service. I went absolutely berserk when the second goal went in.

Gary Shaw. What a player he was, and would have gone on to be. I used to love watching him, not just for his goals, but for the way he used to bring other players into the game. Two perfect examples in this game; the lovely ball on the turn for Sid early in the second half, and the through ball for Mortimer for the second goal

God how I miss Villa Park looking like that.  Whenever people ask whether a new ground would be an option or not, I am not that bothered in all honesty.   The Villa Park I grew up with (stood on the Witton End and slid down the bank after the game) has long since gone, so it wouldn't be that much of a hardship to head elsewhere.

In terms of the game itself, like a lot of people on here I thought that after that game we could definitely go on and win the title.  We bossed Liverpool from the off and that was the game that I believe killed off their challenge.   

I think that was the first appearance of the Electronic scoreboards at the ground that day too and remember the crowd going up as 47,998.  Where were the other two that day?

I remember me my brother and cousin yelling at Sir Dennis that he wasn't offside.He was clean through and kept looking side to side.We thought he was looking at the linesman for a flag.I now know he was probably looking for Shaw , Withe or Morley to lay a ball on.The other thing that was great about the big games that season Blues and WBA night game spring to mind was that even the gangways in the Holte were rammed full of Villa supporters.I think there must of been alot more people in the ground than the official attendance.
