I remember a night match at York in the 70s. Andy Lochhead was getting grief from a York player. He looked around to see if the officials were watching and punched him straight in the face. I went to both legs of the semi final. Our train back to Manchester was held at Knott Mil and Deansgate for about 10 minutes and the bastards surrounded a couple of us and nicked our scarves. We got our revenge in that magnificent second leg.

I remember when we signed big Andy to try and save us from relegation to the third division, he led the line well but just couldn't score.
There was actually a period when he was getting a bit of stick, I remember, but it all came good when he scored his first two goals in a win over Doncaster about six or seven games into our first season in the third division, which ended in glorious failure at Wembley in the League Cup Final.
He couldn't stop scoring in the season after though of course, and I remember his ovation when he came back with Oldham, it still stands as the most moving ovation from a returning Villa player I have ever heard, all of the ground stood and applauded and the big man was clearly moved.
A true Villa legend at a period we really needed one.

Indeed, that was a great occasion. You never hear a bad word about Andy Lochhead. He earned every penny that we paid him. I am still trying to get him to come back as one of the legends that visit on a match day. He was back with Burnley a couple of years ago. I asked Shaun Teale to get him to sign my programme.

Never seen those goals before, thanks for posting. Always wondered what the fuss was about. Now I know.

Steve, how many Villa fans were at the away game? I seem to remember reading 8000 at the time but I was only 8 so am probably very wrong.

Sorry Pat, I've only just seen your question.

I have no idea.  We were at the old scoreboard end - no roof - and it was all Villa there as far I as I recall. 8,000 probably isn't that far off.

I'd travelled across from Bradford and decided after the game that it wasn't worth trying to get back there, so I hopped on a football special back to Brum and started my Christmas holidays early.

I was glad I did, the atmosphere on the train was quite jovial.

I used to love that yellow and blue away kit.

I remember in that game Lochhead, close to the touchline caught an overhit pass to him above his head, goalkeeper style. The fans in general thought it was an amusing thing to do until Doncaster scored from the resulting free kick. He got a bit of stick then before his goals turned the game round. I think it finished 3-2.

I spoke to my Dad's older brother and he remembers all of the 6 brothers and their Dad going to the game while us kids and the Moms had to stay in Deakin Avenue.
as we were not far from the ground us kids went outside to watch the floodlights and listen to the crowd's reaction.
collective groans Man Utd score...
massive roar.....the Villa went close
the loudest and deafening roar, the Villa scored...

it was just like being in the ground.

I found this while going through some boxes in the attic today.
I have no idea how I have this in my possession.

Was the game moved? I always thought it was actually played on 23 December.

I was at both, home and away.
Wonderful.

Utd fans were frightening afterwards at the station and sadly I had to hide my scarf. Return was 23rd.

Whatever happened to that Man United keeper?

Who would have thought what would happen to him in 10/12 years time?
