Villa v Man United - League Cup Semi Final 1970/71
« on: November 01, 2012, 06:19:34 PM »

Footage of both the first leg draw at Old Trafford and the famous second leg win (second leg in colour).

Unfortunately before my time of going to the Villa, although my Dad went to both games and has told me about how fantastic that second leg was, with Villa Park rocking.

I was at both matches with my old dad.  I well remember being on the Holte in a 62k crowd.  My old man was only a little fella and I remember having my hand on his collar all through the game so he didn't go under when the crowd surged.  I also remember that when we got the second goal I went up and my trousers went down and God knows where the old man went! A truly joyous occasion I was so proud of them.

The old man ended up about ten yards below me which I still find amazing as you couldn't move. I told him afterwards that the crowd must have thought he was one of the kids and they passed him back over their heads. I told you he was small.  As for my kecks, I was a real lard arse back then and I could never get trousers to fit me properly.  What is clear though is that nobody gave a toss they were too delerious to notice. Either that or they thought I was an opportunist offering my arse!

I also got nostalgic hearing Ken Wolstonhome describing a cross as a "centre" something you never hear nowadays.

But not before mine!  I was at both legs. As quite a few of us have said in the past the two greatest matchs Villa have appeared in the last 50yrs.

And yes that includes Rotterdam!

To continue with this I definitely remember George Best saying in the press after the first leg "not to worry, we can send our reserves down there and still win".  Wrong wasn't he?

It's forty-two years ago now but that Villa team looked more like a team challenging the top of the first division rather than the third.

It's hard to believe that we were in the third tier looking at that YT video.

I just remember Paddy Crerand saying after the first leg up there "That Mcmahon's one paced....bloody fast"

Never seen the footage of the first leg before . Fred Turnbull makes a tremendous block to keep us in the game and everybody hit their form

Best Law Charlton Crerand Kidd  we played you off the pitch.

Went to both games.
We played better in the Old Trafford game, but for sheer excitement and joy the VP leg beats everything for me. Even better than Rotterdam.

This just serves to remind me of the reason why I love this enigma that is Aston Villa so much.  Melodramatic some may say but that's how I feel.

Ron Manager will support me when I say that we'd witnessed some real shit prior to this and reaching the league cup final back then was the real renaissance culminating in Rotterdam and subsequently our position as a leading member of what passes for top flight football league despite our current lowly position.
