We're getting away from the point a bit, but socialism and catholicism make for very strange bed-fellows imo. Yes, there are issues in the civil rights struggle that certainly deserved to be fought against, but I'm not so sure how willing a lot of them same people would be to offer equal rights to other minorities in society.

I think that sometime in the next 20 years there will be a united Ireland. Sinn Fein were very smart in negotiating that NI could unite with the South after a referendum. Demographics and the weakness of the Unionists indicates that it is now a matter of when not if. If people find it funny now when Percy said the Irish were subjugated this is largely because Republicanism has made so many gains over the past couple of decades. Irish Catholics in the North were discriminated against in jobs, housing, there was a sectarian police force, an army on the streets that killed innocent demonstrators and a government that refused to negotiate with hunger strikers and allowed them to die. We could of course go further back in Irish history and to the sectarian partition of the island of Ireland itself. Significant improvements have been made because of resistance to British rule, which will hopefully end in a united and free Ireland one day.

Thirded.  I honestly can't fathom why people on here get so uptight about Rangers and Celtic.  I bet there aren't many Glaswegians getting upset about Villa and the Blues.

Ferguson played for Rangers for years.

And fell out with them because of their disgust at him daring to marry a catholic.

To whom he was married when they signed him. Ferguson says in his autobiography that he left after being dropped from the team following the 1969 SFA Cup final.

He's on record saying his career at Rangers was affected because of bigots at the club didn't like that he was married to a catholic.

He also said in his autobiography that it made no difference. He apparently dropped an absolute bollock in that final which cost Rangers the game and that was it. Why did they sign him if his wife was a problem?

If I recall correctly, there was a smear campaign against him around that time within the club which were spreading rumours that his child was going to be brought up a Catholic. I doubt that this was the main reason he left though and his error in the '69 cup final was a bigger contributing factor.
