Not purely on sectarian lines. There are many Protestant Celtic fans. Alex Ferguson springs to mind.

Lots of people support oppressed minority causes without being part of that minority. But granted, you don't tend to find people from oppressed minorities supporting their oppressors.

See, as a Protestant I can support Celtic because they don't hate Protestants and I don't hate Catholics. But I couldn't support Rangers because I don't hate Catholics.

That's excessively harsh to be honest, Percy.

To state the bleeding obvious...yes, there are some very bigoted Rangers fans, but I personally don't know any at all who actually hate Catholics.

I can see how your experience of being abused for being English by a Rangers fan will have affected your perception of their support, but I honestly think that was very unusual and very bad luck. I've never had any hassle in Glasgow from either side for being English. Plenty of light-hearted banter but genuinely nothing serious.

Now, which Scottish club did practising Catholics like Jörg Albertz and our own Carlos Cuellar play for again? Both hugely popular players at Rangers. Times really have changed and moved on a long way up here.

And just in case anyone wants to accuse me of bias - I was brought up a Catholic and used to watch Celtic when I lived up here in the mid-90s for a while. But I haven't really been bothered about Scottish football for a long, long time now. Their league's far duller even than the Sky Premier League.

Oh yes. The other thing that fucks me off is those who quote religion as a reason for having an interest in either of them, but wouldn't know the way to the nearest church of their supposed faith.

That's something that also puzzles me. When I meet somebody quite possibly the furthest thing from my mind is what religion they are.

I'm not overly bothered about anyone's religion. Until they try and convert/subjugate others.

Well if you are a Glaswegian, then which side of the Catholic/Protestant divide is important from what I understand.

Or use their religion as a basis of which football team they should support.

To be fair, I'd say that it's as good a reason as any to pick a team.

I chose Villa because my mate at school supported them.

I was just thinking about how this can lead to religious prejudice getting mixed up with football rivalry,  which is not healthy.

I'm only of this opinion because of what I hear from those who are from (or who have lived in) Glasgow.

Having spent plenty of time in Glasgow both are as bad as each other despite what people who have rarely been there will insist. The other side of Glasgow though is that football and religion aside it's one of the nicest friendliest cities around.

This. It is no different to choosing a team based on geographical location or because you go along with your family.

I picked Aston Villa because of the name like Tom Hanks.
