You can't necessarily, but at the same time you can't steer clear of everyone with less than perfect health. Martin Laursen came to us with a dodgy track record of injuries and there were rumours of his medical being a bit less than thorough but nobody would say we shouldn't have signed him.

Hardly the same thing though. We had at least 2 seasons when Laursen barely played for us. You can't exactly do that with a manager can you?

Dunno. we've managed 1 and a half seasons of looking like we have no manager

If you listen to the Liverpool fans it was Comolli's fault all the time that Dalgleish was still there.  After he left, they changed their tune.  In any event, both lost their jobs.

You could equally argue that having had time off might have made him a better proposition, but it's all history now. Sadly it didn't work out, which was a pity as there were times when his team looked like they were going to work.
I think history tends to show that that amount of time away from the game doesn't increase your skills.  Dalgleish was a horror show back at Liverpool, for instance.  But as you say, there were times when we looked quite promising.  In retrospect I think appointing him as DoF rather than manager would have been the smartest move.

As I said some time ago, I wonder what might have happened had he brought in a no. 2 who commanded a bit more respect than McAllister. He could have done the training ground and touchline stuff with Ged sitting in the stand.

What I couldn't fathom was why after Houllier left they did a complete about face in terms of style and strategy by appointing McLeish.  I was bewildered at the time and still am really.  I genuinely have no idea what they were thinking.

Just thinking back Dave, didn't he bring in the fitness coach who had a row with a number of the French players at a major tournament?

Please don't ask me. An entire monastery of Tibetan monks could ponder the question for a century without getting close.

Have you ever put it to them? (The club I mean, not the monks)

TATA?

Rumours from where?
It would be JLR as our sponser.   My source via India reckons its in talks.

Can't see them having the remotest interest in being a sponsor to a football club. Least of all one that may be in the Championship next season.
Why? I can see it as a potentially a clever move for India. Getting behind a great club with history and the history with making the JLR cars.  Makes sense to me.  We live in hope.

That was the point at which our fortunes turned significantly for the worse.

Not just because they inflicted McLeish on us, but because it meant us walking away from the progress we'd started to show at the end of the Houllier season.

If they'd got that appointment even slightly less wrong, lots of things would be much better now. Attendances for one. I'd love to know how many ST holders we lost that season.

Oh yes. Without a proper answer.

Rumours from some suggest an Anglo Indian concertium in to buy Villa.  JLR?
Absolutely no chance. Won't happen in a million years. Think of someone else.

When Martinez wasn't for swaying again they must have hit the panic button. Still, unacceptable really.
The biggest mistake in the last three years of bad ones and bad luck.

Problem with new managers is they bring their mates with them.
