A mate reckons he's heard something about a Porto defender. Could be Abdoulaye Ba?
It's a very tenuous link I know but we'll see if there's anything in it. I'll try and get more info later.

Well now that Lambert's master plan that Dunne will come and save us is in ruins, it's yet another area that needs strengthening. The thought of Baker playing at centre half again terrifies me.

Sporting Lisbon already speaking to Stoke re Wilson Palacios. He would be ideal. Loan with future fee if we stay up.

Wigan are looking to bring Scharner back - could play in Defence or midfield...

Wouldn't have though Stoke were a particularly attractive option for Bent. Perhaps he'd take what he could get.

Get Bent! Stoke favourites to sign £10m Villa striker after Lambert hauls him off at half-time

Quote
Stoke are leading the chase to sign Darren Bent after the striker was substituted at half-time during Aston Villa's 2-1 loss at home to Newcastle last night.

The England international has started just seven Premier League games this season with Villa boss Paul Lambert preferring to use Christian Benteke as a lone striker.

He was given a chance last night but Lambert was clearly not impressed.

Benched: Bent was ineffectual against Newcastle on Tuesday night

Up to eight Premier League clubs are known to be monitoring Bent's situation but Villa, who fell into the bottom three after last night's defeat, do not want to sell to clubs near the foot of the table.

Stoke do not fall into that category and if they are prepared to meet Villa's £10million asking price then Bent could be theirs.

The 28-year-old's £75,000-a-week wage demands could prove a stumbling block but with both Villa and Bent keen to part ways a deal could be forced through before the transfer window shuts tomorrow night.

Bent, who has 16 caps for England, cost Villa £18m rising to £24m only two years ago but they are prepared to cut their losses and let the former Sunderland and Tottenham man leave.

Thing is, line us up 442 or 451 and make us chase and fight for every ball from the first minute and we'd improve 200%

Add a quality defensive midfielder to the mix and I think we can get out of this.

Have Vlaar and Baker as a 2 and they'll each know their roles and they'll do OK. This back 3 nonsense has been a disaster.

If we have to sell Bent to get some money to spend before end of play tomorrow, then do it.

If they're thinking of selling him and pocketing the cash, then bollocks to that.

By John Cross | 29/01/13

Stoke boss Tony Pulis is trying to fund a last-ditch move for Darren Bent with an incredible transfer merry-go-round.

Pulis has told QPR target Peter Crouch and Kenwyne Jones, who is wanted by Swansea, they can both go before Thursday night's deadline.

That will free up enough money to help Stoke make a shock move for England striker Bent, who is out of favour at Aston Villa.

Pulis, who also does not see Charlie Adam as part of his long-term plans, is a huge admirer of Bent and is desperate to bring him in.

Villa bought Bent from Sunderland in a deal worth over £20m two years ago, but current boss Paul Lambert does not fancy the 28-year-old and may allow him to go, even though he has just two days to get a replacement.

Fulham have also been interested but Stoke are very keen, although it will depend on them getting players out first.

If they sell Bent and don't buy anyone then every footballing employee/employer at the club can go fuck themselves.

I'd sell him in a heartbeat.

Let's face it, despite what the national media keep telling us, most Villa fans would have Benteke and Weimann above him in the team.

If we have someone lined up and all we need is the cash and the wages, I'd get it done.

It's probably bullshit. It would be madness to sell Bent when we're short of goals this season. What if Benteke gets injured? Na, absolute madness.

If it's the only way we can get some cash together to sign someone then Bent has to go.

But only if we can then spend that money.

Wouldn't surprise me if we didn't though.
