Could do worse than Danny Murphy (playing well at Blackburn) and Jamie Carragher on loan till end of season.

Both would improve our side a lot.

Went with a friend to watch Derby against Blackburn on Saturday (more to try and forget our current woes than anything else) and Murphy was playing in that game.  He's obviously not as mobile as he once was, but he never stopped talking all game.  He just sat in midfield and was constantly talking to his players and organising.  He's exactly what we've been missing and offering him a short-term contract wouldn't be the worst idea really.

Why would he give up a longer term contract at Blackburn for a short term contract at Villa?

Mat Kendrick on the Mail webchat said this earlier 'The noises coming from the manager again this morning were that signings were very very unlikely.'

I wouldn't hold your hopes out for new faces, based on this.

I'll say one thing regardless of whatevers this window I'm massively concerned by our apparent financial state. We have trimmed and cut the squad to a ridiculous degree. We are barely staying afloat. Where is our potential to progress? If we're not spending any money anymore things are just going to get worse. The cost cutting has to end or we will go under.

Maybe not Sunderland - the Times north east guy, George Caulkin, said earlier that O'Neill is cooling on Scharner (and Zarate). No holding my breath though!

I'm certain we won't bring anybody in.

Journo mate of mine says 'No signings'

If true then lambert has to go- money is there.
If he does not spend whats available in the blind faith that this squad as he says "will be fine and not go down" then he should go.
I cannot imagine he would be that stupid .

Come Thursday at around 22.00  Randy will surprise us again.

The club will announce the signing of Barcelona's Lionel Messi  for a club record 200mil

When asked where he will play him manager Paul Lambert said mumble ..mumble centre half! mumble.

You may well be right, the impression I was given was that Lambert doesn't believe there is anybody out there of sufficient quality to improve the squad.

Yes, I know it's insanity.

I am convinced we will sign at least two players.

When you have such a small budget and such tight wage constraints, you have to play brinkmanship. Come Thursday, there will be no other options left and our bids and offers on wages etc will be the best left for the players concerned.

I am convinced of this.

Me too. Its not ideal but its what it is.
If we fail to do even this though, I will be fucking furious.

Like the optimism but time's running out and the sounds from B6 are not encouraging

If the restrictions on signings are so tight that Lambert is unable to find any player either willing or able to sign, then he cannot be held solely responsible.
As it seems now almost certain that no players will be forthcoming, you have to place the blame at the door of both Lerner and Lambert.

Either way the circumstances make me apoplectic, given our plight.

Tick tock, if nothing happens then the atmosphere amongst the fans will turn very dark and rightly so. This cost cutting has to stop, Everton who have little money are showing they can compete. Why the fuck can't we?

It is beyond comprehension that a club the size of the Villa with a billionairre owner have not got the wherewithal to protect our Premiership status and all that is associated with it.

Lets say paul lambert has £10-£12m to spend and decides not to use it in the absurd assumption that he cannot find anyone good enough to improve us - how would that be lerners fault?

He MUST spend the money available !
