If I had to guess I'd say Lambert definitely has money to spend, is playing some sort of pokerface with whoever is still left in the game and it may or may not lead to him doing anything. I reckon this "signings unlikely" thing thats drip fed out to an increasingly ostracised local press is part of that. I hope so because the alternative is awful.

He's playing chicken, making out he can afford to lose it but really he can't. He knows it and probably so do any agents that we might be involved in. Maybe the haggling/posturing might lead to an extra player if it goes his way. Maybe.

what was our wage bill in the last accounts? Something unbelievable i seem to recall, but there's hardly anyone remaining from the MON era now. Did they keep paying mental wages after he left? I don't get it.

I'm sure I'd heard that the wages situation was back to something like 50% of turnover now. Maybe I imagined that.

"I have no complaints about having very little money to spend - I knew the remit when I took over," added Lambert.

"He [Lerner] hasn't washed his hands of this club but there will be no splashing out like Darren Bent two years ago [who joined Villa for £18m]."

"We can only go with what we've got."

If he is playing poker he is very good at it.

Like playing poker with a mirror behind your back - everyone can see your hand, so making out you've got a royal flush is mental.

Warning, the following quotes may take away your will to live.

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert has stressed he "won't walk away" from the club's battle for Premier League survival ahead of Tuesday's home match against fellow strugglers Newcastle.

The Scot admits he has not experienced a run like the one Villa are on at the moment - two points from the last six games and knocked out of two cups by clubs from lower divisions - during his managerial career.

When asked if there was any chance he would quit, Lambert said: "No. I can only do, or try to do my best. There's no chance I'd walk away from it.

"You have to fight like anything to get up. You pick yourself up and there's no point in lying down and accepting it. I've never had a run like this as a manager or been hit from pillar to post like this. It's an experience you take on board and you use it."

Sick of hearing him moaning about money- he spent over £20m and bought in 8 players only 5 months ago, many teams have spent far less and are doing much better than us - he spent more in one month in the summer than in his entire career at norwich so he should stop moaning .

He should have got the bullet 2 weeks ago- but  extremely unlikely he will get sacked whatever happens - farcical!
How he can say on tv we dominated the millwall game is beyond me .he clearly seems to be deluded.

eastie make your mind up! Surely if you're confident we'll spend money you shouldn't be too worried.

I'm really starting to think that the job is too big for him and he's afraid of spending money in case the new players doesn't work out. IMO when you are a manager you shouldn't worry about money - manager should use as much resources as possible and given by the club, especially if the team is in desperate situation.

He has the money - he MUST  spend it.- he cannot be that stupid not to, it would be suicidal.
Said for a long time lambert should have been sacked - he has lost the plot.
I dont get this crap he spouts about only signing better players and not wasting money .
it would be hard to spend it on worse players , therevmust be plenty who would improve us.
I think he surely will spend it but fuck knows on who- i hope not some lower league unknowns.
While paul lambert is manager i will always be worried.

It's more a case of him making out he has a pair or twos when he actually has a prile.
