If we want an ex-villa central defender to shore things up for a year then offer a 1-2 year deal to Mellberg, at least he doesn't come with a load of baggage, he was quality and left on his own terms.  Knight and Davies were sold because they weren't good enough.

They weren't good enough for where we were trying to go/be. Now our sights are a lot lower and I think they were both good enough for a team battling relegation.

So when we're not battling relegation, and they're not good enough any more, what do we do with them?

Exactly, if they were the only 2 defenders in the world that were available to sign in the next 9 days then they'd be worth discussing but as that isn't the case I just don't see any value in either of them.  Much better to look for players that are better than where we are and convince them we should be doing more than it is to sign players suited for where we are.  I know the problems we have in the short term are important but burdening the club with overpaid crap in the mid- to long-term isn't the right way to fight our way clear unless it's the only way.

Problem being that if it is and we're left with these type of players or nothing, Randy and Lambert will still get stick from some sections for signing them.  I guess the mindset is that there is always better we missed out on.

In the short term I'd have Zat Knight back in our defence if money is really tight.

Christ!  Beverley Knight but please not Zat Knight!

I think Paul Lambert has no intention of signing anybody in this window. 'The gaffer has told him not to bother'.

Mellberg maybe. Zat Knight? I would rather Paul McGrath come out of retirement.

Or Ken McNaught and Chris Nicholl!

On the subject of centre-halves, I wonder if we are still after the defender Douglas who we were linked with in the summer?  I recall reading somewhere that he was out of contract this summer, so surely would be a better bet than the likes of Davies and Knight.

I take it the fact we're still discussing past duffers returning means nowt's happened? The bloody bbc site caused me to get my hopes up as it has a picture of lambert over a link for breaking transfer news. Think they're being ironic...

How long has Laursen had to rehab now?  And he's in the country.  He'd do 6 months.  Alright we'd not be able to play the offside trap, but fuck it if we prop him up on the edge of the 6 yard box we'd concede half as many goals from set pieces.

Davies is definately worse than Dunne, Vlaar and Clark so i don't see the point. Knight is of a similar standard to Dunne and not quite as good as Vlaar, so little point in that one too. Basically, all of the above are shit, some shitter than others.

Midfielder Moussa Sissoko will be left out of Toulouse's matchday squad for tonight Cup tie against Paris Saint-Germain raising speculation he is on his way to Newcastle United, reports talkshite. The France international, 23, is out of contract in the summer but Toulouse are willing to sell him for £2.5m during this window.

on the beeb...could he be coming to us perhaps? :'(

So how about a MON reject XI. A team of players who were bought by MON and sold on later as they were deemed surplus to requirements (i.e. not those like Young or Milner who moved because they wanted to)

                                Carson
                   Collins    Knight     Davies
L.Young                                              Shorey
                         NRC    Sidwell

Heskey                                         Routledge

                          Carew

Forwards are a bit dodgy as I'm not sure Carew and Heskey can actually run nowadays. I'd have included Maloney but as I remember he wanted to leave Villa.

If they get him for that and we don't, I would be asking questions of the transfer operations. We should be getting this player, and if the team we are playing next right in there in the relegation scrap do instead, that would be terrible.

If they get him, Debauchy. Haidera and this centre half, plus Gouffran, while being completely French, I will be very envious. And a tad pissed off, when they have signed people in position that we need at fees we could afford.
