Sorry if this has already been posted but in the Saturday Digest column of this mornings Mail I came across this.

but when asked about the chances of signing players Lambert replied 'none whatsoever' 'Darren Bent and Jean Makoun? we are nowhere near that'

Could mean anything but he appears to be saying none whatsoever!

The context was a big money transfer window like the Bent Makoun one. He left open smaller deals.

Still terrible news of course but not as bad as no transfers.

The question (unless Lambert misunderstood it) was as above. Accepting he does not appear to be good at interviews he is still saying no players coming in.

Of any standard.

What it means is that we won't be spending £25m+ on two players & I think we all know / accept that this would be the case. I'm sure if we can get 2 players in we will, he's just being truthful & saying he can't guarantee that it will happen.

Interesting, then, that I read Brian Marwood has been linked with a Director of Football role with us. Could be just another rumour mind..

If that was the case should have had him in and working for the beginning of Jan at the very latest, too late now to achieve anything for this seasons desperate situation. Good idea moving forward though as many have said we need some footballing nouse at board level.

I hate Marwood, but a role like that is something we need IMO.

Me too, if only because he has one ear significantly bigger than the other.

That's my take on it as well, but the doom and gloom merchants have it as we won't be signing anyone.

If we don't sign anyone we will go down. It's so stark, and so obvious, and Lambert can't be happy with the situation meaning Lerner has to just realise what the situation is, not what he wishes it was.

Lambert won't be happy with Lerner, and vice versa as well. Lets not forget the millions Lmabert wasted on some absolute crap last summer. Between the pair of them we've become an absolute mess.
We've got Laurel and Hardy running the club.

For what it's worth, I think we'll go down even if we do sign someone (assuming we're not about to splash out on anyone significantly better than what we have). It's possible, but it seems unlikely that someone like, say, Dale Stephens is going to make such a big difference as to hugely improve our performance.

I just think we'll have to rely on Vlaar staying fit and being better than I think he is (I think he's quite good), N'Zogbia coming into form, and Lambert.....well, Lambert just doing MUCH better all round, really.

Doesn't seem too likely, but you never know.

Lambert definitely needs to sort his tactics out as well, we don't press the ball anywhere near enough and if you give teams time and space they'll punish you.

I agree about the mess. Villa have spent over odds on players and now financial prudence. The lower league English players bought seem to have re sell value if they prove they are premier league quality. Beneteke would be sold if we go down for no more than 10mil. I think likes of Hutton and warnock will leave in last week of window maybe with warnock for a nominal fee as he's out of contract. It also sounds like any players villa and Lambert are in for or who he wants are atm a no go and that's why he's saying we'll go with what we ve got. The fact that who ever we sign wont appease the majority of fans. This is due to the likelihood be players who are deemed not good enough/unheard of/surplus to requirements/inexperienced. I fear that signings unless exceptional - which has been categorigally ruled out- wont actually do much to stem the tide. The real work is Lambert and his coaching staff to get a settled formation/team and morale and motivation for the fight of staying in the premier league

You know what, I think that's just a lack of confidence. Lambert's always been about pressing off the ball. The players, however, seem so devoid of belief that they just sit back waiting for things to go wrong, rather than going up and getting at opponents.

Well it's up to the manager to give them confidence, and times running out.

Were 6 points behind 13th place with 16 games to go and you've already got us down? Absolutely crazy! Is this attention seeking internet behaviour because you don't hear this stuff in pubs. Yes people say their worried but not to the extent you read on here or other Villa portals.
