Can i just remind everyone that Dunne is shit. Utter shit.
Dunne is this seasons Cuellar, when he's out of the team everyone thinks we miss him and he was amazing. As soon as he is in the team everyone fucking moans.

Does anyone know is the "We don't announce transfers after 2pm" urban legend or does AVFC really work like that?

It's true. 2pm on the 1st of January.

I can hear hint of sarcasm in your reply...I asked because you can never tell since it's AVFC :D

To my mind, we always look better defensively when he plays. Sure, he's made the odd ricket and had better games than others, but we paid £6m and that's what you get for that price. In our present predicament, he would make a massive difference.

Dunne is a £6m defender for about 89 minutes every game.  For the other minute he's Rick the pie eater who plays for the dog and duck.

I think that we only sign players at the end of the transfer window to save on a months wages....

I think you've said the same as I've just said.

Despite our transfer history and knowing we drag our feet, I am absolutely bloody staggered that we have reached 16 January without at least 1 loan signing, given the predicament we are in.

Bradford don't want to loan any of their players out until they know whether they are in the final.

If you want to do business before the last minute you have to leave a few brown paper bags somewhere.

Dunne, Warnock and Hutton were all crap to varying degrees last season, of that there can be no doubt.  However, the defence this season has been absolutely atrocious, the worst I've ever seen, so when you go for more than half a season conceding two goals a game on average, it's only natural that people get desperate to fix it by whatever means possible.

I'll give you the other two but I don't recall Dunne being crap last season. In fact, our defensive performances deteriorated after he injured his shoulder against Man City and he made a difference when he came back at the end of the season.

I suppose having his carcass on the pitch means there is less goal to aim for

Dunne coming back isn't going to be something to save us. Not because he is a bad player, but because he is a player who needs to be playing in a specific way.

If you are playing a deep defence and playing counter-attacking football then he's great. He can just sit there and head everything away that arrives. It's why he was great for O'Neill, is often great for Ireland and looked perfectly fine when he he played under McLeish.

When you try to play a more open, passing game then it's not something he is comfortable with because he is higher up the pitch. He needs to rely on pace and reading rather than instinct and strength. Hence why he couldn't cope under Houllier and why he won't manage under Lambert unless we change the way we play.

Incidentally, the above is the reason that I don't see the point in buying Hangeland (or to a lesser extent Dawson). He was great under Hughes and Hodgson who played deep, but as soon as Jol came in he looks poor. And unless we're planning on changing the way we play to suit one or two people (which Lambert hasn't shown any signs of doing yet), then there isn't really any point bringing him in.

Frankly Dunne whether we're playing a system that suits him or not cannot help but improve our defence at the moment. It has been absolutely horrific and experience is vital to improving it.

Another day and noone signed or close to being signed by the looks of it. We're approaching another crucial game and it doesn't look like our issues are being addressed.
