The problem with taking anyone from abroad is that no matter how good they are, they will need time to settle. We don't have time for someone to take half a season to settle. They need to come into centre midfield, dictate the game, talk to the young players, and stop us conceding goals from day one.

In reality it simply isn't going to happen. Coupled with the financial constraints, it's little wonder there are few rumours and little encouragement from Lambert.

I cant believe anyone can think NRC is going to be our saviour, he was struggling to get in the Ipswich team. Huddlestone would add a physical presence, is better than what we currentyl have and if we could get him on loan would take him. Dont know whether AVB would let him go now though, think the young lad Livermore was being touted as going on loan to QPR.

Wasn't there talk in the summer of bringing Phil Neville in?

I'd go for that right now, and I'd tell Michael Dawson that he's the best centre half in the world and he'll captain the team we'll build around him.

Those two aren't last payday mercenaries, they're good pros who've captained good sides and Dawson's got years left in him.

Get someone like the lad Bridcutt, who's confident and playing well in too and we'd be sound, with the players coming back.

What's that, £15m? Buttons compared to what's at stake.

How about David Bently, he may provide the crossing for Benteke we've been craving.

Where is he these days? I remember many on here having their arses in their hands when we missed out on him and got Milly.

Think he's probably a bit far gone, but we could do with someone of that ilk.

Remember signing Solano for peanuts turned a shit side good. It's all it takes sometimes.

I'm new to the old Twitter lark but I've just picked up a tweet on some transfer site that Villa are close to completing the signing of a CB and a CDM.

Sorry if that's already been discussed I can't be bothered to go too far back. Probably nonsense I know.

I put this in the Henke thread buy is probably appropriate here as well

Henke, who has been busy scouting for Villa in Switzerland over the weekend, told German newspaper DK: "It's true, I'd like to work with FC 04, but I must first clarify with my club Aston Villa."
The 55-year-old ex-Borussia Dortmund and Bayern Munich assistant boss has only been working for his former player Paul Lambert for three months, but has apparently caught the coaching bug again.
Thomas Oral, the Ingolstadt trainer, has offered Henke the role of his number two and if he were to go, that could leave Villa without a high-level scout on the continent right in the middle of arguably their most important transfer window in years.
Lambert is desperate to make signings this month and is increasingly looking abroad to find value in the transfer market.
Henke watched Bayern Munich beat FC Basel in a friendly on Saturday and is following a couple of the Swiss club's squad very closely for Villa's manager.
Basel winger Valentin Stocker, 23, was linked to Villa in 2011 and recently admitted that the time may be right for him to move on.
"I do not think that FCB is my last stop, I can play abroad. There has been interest for me already."
Lambert's priority, however, is a new centre back and Basel's Aleksandar Dragovic could fit the bill. The Austrian international, 21, caught the eye against Manchester United in last season's Champions League and has missed only one game for Basel this season.

Speaking of Twitter there's a cracking row going on between Joey Barton and Didi Hamman. Coke abuse, gambling habits, shagging, allsorts.

By "that ilk" do you mean somebody more concerned with his hairstyle than playing football? He had half a good season a few years back and just seems to have been poncing about ever since.

I'm being deliberately flippant, I realise you mean a creative, flair player but in our situation we need players prepared to sweat blood for the cause and earn the right to play a bit of football.

Don't we need players who can put the ball on Bentekes head from closer than the half way line? Seems the best chance of getting a goal in the last few weeks.

Speaking of Twitter there's a cracking row going on between Joey Barton and Didi Hamman. Coke abuse, gambling habits, shagging, allsorts.
The war of words began after the former Germany international took exception to a Barton rant regarding the running of his former club Newcastle.

However, the QPR loanee responded in typically brusque fashion, leading to the pair exchanging insults at regular intervals.

Here is a selection of the exchange:

DH: "Joey do yourself a favour and stay out of club politics QPR and NUFC have paid you well for playing not to commentonrecruitment"

JB: "trying to give me stick you cheeky man. Get your own life in order first... #peopleinglasshouses"

DH: "I never said a bad word about my ex clubs and I never will as that's called respect and dignity Joseph .You got a lot to learn"

JB: "only cos your trying your ******** off to get a job now your skint. Don't try a be all self righteous u blert. I know u!
"what about they way I seen you prepare for a game. That dignified? Worst pro I've ever seen Youve got more front than Harrods"

DH: "My life was in order well before yours you should light a candle for Fernandes and Llambias every day for paying you that money"

JB: "you earned a few quid yourself. U choose to spunk it. Don't hate me cos ur a **** up!
"u WHERE a good player. More to life than football, u nugget...
"if you wanna have it out publicly. Am here all day mate. Not having idiots like you talking like u actually have a clue!
"you where a good player. Won more than me, yeah. Thats were you en mate on the pitch. Ur life's a car crash. #pipedown

DH: "The problem is that you think because you play in France you think you are an international player #farfromit"

JB: "like being a family man. Being honest. Being loyal. Being a man. Being able to look at yourself in the mirror. Can u do that?"

DH: "Yes I do look in the mirror. I made mistakes but don't forget where you come from.Dont bite the hand off that feeds you"

JB: "don't be getting all self righteous. If I were you i'd think twice about trying to be clever or giving ANYBODY stick."

DH: "Joseph I won't get personal as Twitter is not the place to do that but don't think you are bigger than you are"

JB: "before you get fully emptied out publicly, you blert. You've got my number. You know where to find me 24/7"

DH: "No problem Joseph lets see each other in 5 years I hope I don't have to go to Walton #prison
"You said you want to boil burglars alive last week ..get a grip son and concentrate on your football ...England international

JB: "champions leagues medals don't make ur wife or kids respect u. Ur life like a car crash mate. Sort ur own house out!"
"Sick of washed up former pro's giving it big portions cos they've wasted their money. Medals don't pay your kids schools fees... #jogon
"I won't however be told be someone I deem vastly inferior as a MAN, how to live my life."

DH: "The medals won't make my kids respect me but im not prepared to punch a child in the face in McDonald's for them to respect me"
"I love a pint but never took drugs in my life be careful what you say England international #dontgetangryjoseph"
