Downings last season here he was player of the season but Liverpool was a bad fit for him and its not always a case of the grass being greener- he is a shadow of the player who left here and they will struggle to get more than £8m for him.

Do they still owe us money for the deal that took him there?

Ye thats a good point. Cause in the summer transfer when we were supposed to be after Caroll. Sure it was mentioned they still owed us money for SD ....

I think it was 50% in the summer that he went there and 50% this summer so it should be all paid up.

For all the (justified) criticism of some of our transfer dealings, credit due for doing a brilliant deal on Downing.

He'll wind up at Sunderland on some obscene salary, presumably.

Or was it in the press?

Seem to remember hearing something about it. I wasn't the only one to hear it as it led some to speculate that we could get Andy Carroll on the cheap by using the debt as part of the deal.

Wasn't sure about taking Keane back on loan but now I think I probably would do, he ad a very good influence last season and looked motivated and hungry- we probably could do with his experience.

Is Tim Cahill at galaxy too? Could do worse than taking both Cahill and Keane on loan.

They pretty much play the same position in AMC which is where Ireland has been doing okay.

Would put pressure on Ireland to perform or take his place , this will be our last window so we need to well covered in case of an injury crisis- Keane certainly would walk into this team for me.

Taking two quality experienced players on loan would also mean not a huge outlay so cash to use elsewhere.

Survival is the name of the game and our squad are hugely inexperienced .
