Bent is a luxury player, I think the team would improve if we replaced Bent with someone who would score 10-15 goals a season but also bring the team into the game and create chances.

I'm not sure what point you're trying to make John. On one hand you've said that his scoring record is up there with Rooney and Drogba, but at the same time you're not convinced because he has'nt played for a top 4 side.

His goals kept us up a couple of seasons ago and if he can get back to that form, we'll be urging Lambert to give him a new contract not sell him.

you have hit the nail on the head there with me, i am a bit confused as to where i stand with Bent,

he isnt a player i have raved about in the past, i dont dislike him as such but i just dont think he's as good as others do on here, then you look at his goalscoring record and think well why dont i rate this guy realy highly, but i just dont,
i think he's great for us but i dont think he's one of the worlds top strikers like Shearer was, so yes i am a bit confused, it would not be the end of the world for me to see him go, but obviously we would need to replace him, which will be very difficult i admit

This. I remember RVP saying that although he has scored 7 goals this season he would like some more assists also.

Sunderland really improved when they sold him?? They went from top 6 to relegation fodder. I just don't get this calling him a luxury player. He literally kept us up 2 seasons ago, no one was calling him a luxury player then. We need to play to his strengths as we were doing in the latter part of that season

How much do you think a player like that might cost?

Bent is capable of 20 goals plus, it's up to Lambert to get the best out of him and play to his strengths.

We've not had a full season of Bent yet have we? The way lambert is rotating we're unlikely to do ?

its all right saying what Lambert should do,
but if he doesnt see Bent as part of the long term future then what can you do,
if its a between Bent or Lambert then the manager will win every time, and there is nothing we can do about it

You could apply this to Arsenal as well i suppose. They sell their best players which is why they've won nothing for the last 7 years.

In Bents one full season at Sunderland he scored 25 goals and Sunderland finished 13th on 44 points

The season he left for us Sunderland finished 14th on 41 points.

So Bent basically made no difference and that's without them actually replacing him when he left.

People need to stop being so narrow minded and saying he is a goal scorer, so he has to play.
Sometimes it's about the team and not the player and when Bent plays he is the sole focal point, he does nothing to help the team and he is not good enough to do that in a poor team like Villa, becaus it will be to the detriment of the team.

Yes he will always score, but its not about Bent scoring its about Aston Villa winning games.

I don't remember Lineker being a team player and Michael Owen definatley is'nt, some strikers are'nt. They were there  to put the ball in the back of the net. It's exactly why Houiller signed Bent in the first place and thank god he did eh?

Surely one will make the other?

I really don't understand this. We waited over ten years to get a top-class goalscorer then as soon as we signed one some of us can't wait to get rid of him.

Quite.

The nearest we've come in years is Dwight Yorke.

I'd like to know who we could get in to do the same scoring job at a price we could afford.

Nearest?! Dwight was a far superior player to Bent. I reckon Carew probably was too.

Although Carew's bad was considerably badder than Bent's bad.

Bent's a good player and I don't think we should take any old offer, but if there's big money for a (pretty much) 29 year old and Lambert's funds are limited then it wouldn't be the worst idea in the world.
