In response to DCF:

He was linked to the Portsmouth job so he must have got some press attention way back then (just after McLeish was appointed).  Primarily I recall an article/interview (can’t remember) wherein Ferguson was singing his praises about how he’d sit on the bench (and lets face it he was on the bench a lot) and study the game, spotting opportunities.  I think this could be seen in his game too, as he was all about movement and intelligence rather than any physical attributes.

Then you watch that MUTV youtube programme and Giggs and others are saying that you could see he was always planning for management.  Even Rio “the ego” Ferdinand saying he wants to be his #2 if he goes into management.

None of the above means he’d be a success of course I just feel that the likelihood increases if you are a real student/geek about the game rather than a chest thumping ex-player living off your playing reputation (of which Ole does quite well too).

I wish they''d stop using the meaningless (in this context )vibrant/cy term, it just makes them sound like a bad hairspray advert. Must be Faulkner's new pet word.

Still i think they're after someone else. they sounded him out but i think they'll pursue elsewhere first

Randy flew his private jet out to pick him and his wife up just to 'sound him out'?

I reckon its near enough dead. If you really want the job you'll take it straight away and if Villa really want him they'd have offered it him straight away. Otherwise its a bit rum saying "well can you hold on and string you current employers along while we see if we can get our preferred choice?" Different matter if he was unemployed
OGS strikes me as a man with dignity and integrity, and he cant accept or decline a job if an offer hasnt been made yet. Interview processes for normal jobs can take weeks so to expect any news so early in discussions is unrealistic particularly if they want to sound other candidates.

If he is offered the job then I dont see why he wouldnt be able to continue in his current role until 28th May. It may turn out that we may not have a manager announced until after this date, and as long as they get the right man then thats the only thing thats important.

The Aston Villa board has embarked upon an interview process which will lead to the appointment of a new manager.

This process will be focused and consistent with the board's objectives which are to secure a manager who can help to reinvigorate the club and bring some vibrancy back to Villa.

We are aware that certain individuals have been linked with our managerial vacancy but, out of respect to all potential candidates and any clubs they may currently be employed by, we will not discuss specific individuals by name.

We will update supporters when we have more news.

So he has been interviewed then, not such an informal chat after all.

That's actually a good point, hadn't noticed that. I also don't think Molde's investors would be so bent out of shape if it was just a chat.
Interview PROCESS is the keyword in that statement...where does it state that an "interview process" cant consist of informal chats, formal interview and negotiations particulalry when there a number of candidates to speak to. Do you really want them to offer the job to the first person they speak to???

They have 3 games in the next week, maybe today was the only time they could meet and randy arranged his flight , we usually do 2 rounds of interviews so it would make sense with ogs and the board saying he is one of the candidates and there will be others to be seen , the expense of picking him up by plane is loose change to lerner.

Yes I think it's all smoke and mirrors and he's probably been offered the job.

Personally I don't think it is which manager will say yes to poor old down at heel Aston Villa.

Randy Lerner is mega rich and every man has his price.  Rather than OGS going home to think about it I think he has gone home while Randy thinks about it.   If Lambert or Martinez or Rodgers had a big enough lump of money dangled under their noses they would take it regardless of who was dangling it.   That's what I think.

Still i think it would near enough be done and dusted if he was coming. What he said afterwards were not really the words of someone who's about to leave his present club. I think they have a  preferred choice but wanted possible alternatives after last year's balls-up. Could be wrong but thats my feeling

I don't really see the point of that official club statement. What does it actually achieve? What are they trying to say?

Only thing I can think is they're aware of the storm kicking off in Molde and are covering their arses in some way.

Actually, that doesn't really make sense.

He might just have gone back as they have a game on Sunday to prepare for.

And the fact that he lives over there might also be a good excuse for him to return.

It sounded like a lot of effort for just a 'formal chat'. I don't think he was expecting to be asked back to England so soon after he left, so maybe he's gone home to mull over it which would be understandable.

Also, look at the shit flying about over there now.

He's clearly come over against the wshes of their chairman and wouldn't confirm to him that he would be there at the end of  the season.

He clearly wants the job and the bridges seem to be smouldering in Molde. I also doubt Lerner would bother coming over if it weren't likely to result in an appointment.

Apparantly Sir Paul McCartney was asked today if he was upset about King Kenny getting the sack and he replied "yes of course"
When also asked if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer may join the Villa, Paul stated he thought the Norwegian Wood :)

I`ll get me coat !

And maybe they are both telling the truth and he is one of several candidates at the beginning of a long process!

Are you trying to convince yourself  paulie?

He clearly wants the job ? Says who? He says he spoke to villa out of respect and i think it will be maybe a couple of weeks before we get our man and i expect several to be spoken to- nothing clear yet!
