This is a bit like the invisible bridge scene in Indiana Jones. It's a huge leap of faith with potential for great success or great failure. I'm undecided, though shading slightly to the yes side. I don't believe for a moment that things couldn't get worse than McLeish, but on the other hand don't care if we do become a stepping stone for him.

I wonder how players will react to the radical swings in footballing style over the last three years it would further represent, but at the very least it shows forward thinking.

Dunno.

Just a side note. The frequent use of "stepping stone" has created a monster of an ear worm, that will be with me all day.

Cautious yes based on the fact he did a decent job with Man U Youth but it also says that RL is again going to ask him to bring on more as we tried to last year from our youth. This in turn means total lack of new investment to compete again, that's the bit i dont like

But surely just because he will be asked to work and bring through our academy players (as long as they're good enough) why does that signal a lack of investment. What it means is if we have £20 million to spend it can go on a couple of key players rather than spending all that money on 7 or 8 crap, middle of the road Sidwell type players.

After all the names mentioned so far, Ole is the only one I'm excited about us getting

He's now odds on everywhere to be our manager. Lambert has drifted to about 5/1 second favourite....

The worries that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer would use villa as a stepping stone are crazy too. So what if he does. It means we're successful. And it wouldn't be Manchester united i'd be worried about. They'd want him to be consistant for a number of years. The only team that would be gung-ho enough to rob someone else's success after a couple of years would be Chelsea.

80%+ say yes.. youve all lost the plot. Thats what a year of Eck does to you!
Maybe thats what people thought when Everton appointed Moyes. Preston to Everton?

Try looking up Moyes' record at Preston before comparing him to somebody whos done nothing in comparison. Norwegian title (that was bought) is all he's achieved. Would be 3 crap appointments in a row in my opinion.

yeh dunno either but as we only stayed in the premier league by default its not that much of a leap. Essentially we should have been relegated but the teams below us were cr8pper so we survived. We needed two wins to ensure safety and got a draw and a loss! FFS Alex you muppet.

Hopefully he'll bring us in a new direction, build from the bottom (hopefully sorting out the leaky defence) and got us at least competing on the pitch.

We got a get out of jail free card by staying up, so I say gamble it all on a project...

Big follower of Norwegian football are we?

David Moyes got Preston promoted and then they did fairly well in the Championship. Certainly a decent achievement, but hardly something astonishing. Presumably if you want something similar then Nigel Adkins is your first choice for manager?

I believe he's first choice.

Good move in your opinion?

Very.
I agree. I posted a similar though on the other thread.
This brings me nicely to another point.
Had I, or another non mod, started this thread instead of Risso, as good as a mod, would we have been met with the inevitable "We already have a thread for our next manager" and had it locked down?  ;)
Think I can hazard a guess at the answer  :)

Your theory breaks down on the point that Risso isn't a mod.

Not my first choice but I wouldn't be against the appointment. Would inject a bit of excitement at least.

Nice to see the board thinking outside the box this time instead of the usual tired choices though.

Disagree with your second point - I think both Houllier and McLeish were pretty left field choices,  no-one was really expecting either of them.  McLeish for all the wrong reasons, but Houllier was  an interesting one,  which I think could have worked out but for his health issues.  As for OGS, my initial reaction was it's too soon and too much of a gamble but having slept on it, and looking at the fact he likes to play proper football,  I think it's quite an exciting way to go.  Everton took a gamble on Moyes 10 years ago without any PL experience, and the likes of McCarthy and McLeish are living proof that PL experience should not be a deciding factor.   I do wonder how much influence SAF is having here though....

Yes - I would much prefer to see someone with potential given a chance hopefully bringing through the academy players than old style managers like Bruce, McCarthy, Curbishley et al.

I don't think he's much more of a risk than Lambert, Rodgers and Martinez.
