Having a go at those who thought we were doomed, after we've secured safety, seems like a cheap swipe. I wasn't convinced that we'd go down myself, but there were times during the match on Sunday that I was more than a tad worried. I'd like to know how much those who knew we weren't going down won after putting their house on it at the bookies, and whether I can borrow some.

I agree and seemed at one point to have been labelled as someone who thought we were doomed. What, in fact, I was saying was very different in that I couldn't understand the '100% certain we will stay up' posters who were saying that with absolute conviction from before to the Sunderland game. As if there was no other argument and everyone was wasting their time even vaguely worrying about it. There weren't many of those, but even so, it was never going to be the case in my view and so it has proved sadly. It was always going to be skin of our teeth as CJ says

It's very much 'H&V' that, within hours of us securing our PL survival, we've found something else we can have a big row about.

I love this site sometimes.

I suspect we are all the same Paulie

You would probably find Man City fans are at it too, arguing about whether they should sell Milner and Johnson over the summer or not...

Skin of our teeth is about right. Any other season and we'd be down - Bloose and Blackpool both went down on 39 points last season, and we may or may not equal or exceed that total. We've been incredibly lucky that 2 or 3 other teams have been incredibly shit. I really fear for us next season if he's still here.

Last season was exceptional, go back a few more seasons and you'll see that our points total and GD would have kept us up in most of them.

You're right.  35 or 36 is usually sufficient.  Everyone talks of the magical 40 point mark when rarely is it required.  Yes, there are 3 teams worse than us but normally the 3 bottom teams are much, much worse.

I know you're saying it does, but that does not excuse a very poor season.

I got pretty edgy, I never thought we were certainties to go but at the same time we were never certainties to stay up(until now).

The only time I thought we were totally screwed was during the Bolton games when their second goal went in, but then I remembered that I'd prediced a loss but that we'd still stay up, and tried to compose myself a bit.

That was the point where I thought we were going down as well. Having to rely on a lst minute Albion equaliser to keeps us up in the penultimate game of the season is not where Aston Villa should be.

To my mind, the "told you so, we didn't get relegated" nonsense now is every bit as pointless as the "every team is going to win their remaining games, we won't win any" stuff was.

"And to think, you people thought we were doomed to relegation" - said with safety just secured (and only on the basis of goal difference) seven days before the end of the season, and us nestled in 16th place. Bit hollow, no?

I'd forgive anyone for being convinced we were going down. We were certainly shit enough for long enough to be right in the mix.

no , sorry not having that,

as far as i'm concerned you stand and fall on H+V by what you say, its all there in black and white,
if you are wrong thats it you have to be big enough to admit it.

Take the prediction of whether Mcleish goes,
80% on here a few months ago said he was 'going nowhere' including you,
every one banging on about how he's as solid as a rock and Randy would never get rid, i argued long and hard that he was a dead man walking and he would be toast come the next season.

as time has gone on people have changed there opinion , which everyone is allowed to do,
but we still dont know, he might stay and in that case i will have got it completly wrong and will hold my hands up come the time and take it on the chin.

if you argue a point where there is a definite outcome like Relegation or Mcleish leaving then there will be those who called it right and those who didnt, winners and losers,

on relegation i put my money where my mouth is, i thought we had enough points in the bag a number of weeks ago, and although it was tighter than i expected i was still right.

if Mcleish stays, i will expect i few 'i told you so's' and i will deserve them, i wont be sweeping anything under the carpet, whats said is said, thats the way it should be in my view.

Blimey John, there aren't any prizes you know.

"Oooh, look at what you could have won, a speedboat!"
