I'm convinced half the posters on this thread are blu-noses in disguise.

How anyone can think Roberto Martinez is a bad manager is beyond me - he is the one who revolutionized Swansea City - the team that dismantled us at Villa Park contained nine players signed by him.  He introduced a totally new philosophy - and took them from the brink of dropping out of the football league completely - and the Swans fans are still bitter he left.

Keeping Wigan in the Premiership with a yearly budget deficit of £14 million is a feat in itself.  And let's not forget - that awful Wigan team stayed up by beating Man Utd, Liverpool, Newcastle, and Arsenal.  We couldn't beat an egg.  Every year Martinez has to cope with his best players sold from under him - and is it any wonder they start slow and finish strong - good coaching comes over months - not overnight - the fact that Wigan are still Premiership should not be underestimated.

And as for the lunatic suggestion that Di Matteo would be a good appointment - that is like saying Tony Barton was our best manager ever - because he happened to be in the hot seat when the team won the European Cup.  Any Villa fan with any sense knows that that Villa team was Ron Saunders Villa team - and Barton - much like Di Matteo - was in the right place at the right time.

Villa need a man who will be there long term - a man who has a vision of how football should be played - a man who can spot talent and develop it - and a man with a habit of turning over the top teams.

That can only be Martinez - and I hope for one that he is the man our owner gets.

UTV

Very well said. I am puzzled how so many fans see Martinez as a desperate manager who can only keep his team up. Every season he has to coach his new players all season and only at the end do they come good. He is in the same mould as OSG but much further developed in his career ........

First choice on football philosophy, style of play, ability to develop youngsters.

I'm just wary of anyone but McLeish syndrome.

Poyet next for me - I just see Lambert as a MON clone - it works up to a point - but total football it ain't.

I see that Graham Taylor has relinquished his Non Executive Director role at Watford.

Upstairs job at Villa. Any thoughts?

(just speculating)
Yes, but only after we've appointed a new manager and it were to get said appointments blessing. Sir Graham knows the game inside out. I know his 2nd stint was a disaster and he signed some absolute turkey's, but in fairness to him, he was probably bought in because he was one of the few who would have taken the job on under Dougs remit at the time. And that was to, like now, balance the books after an outlay that never brought us the success required to get that money back. He had a tough task on that budget. You could never question the guys knowledge.

He's 67, he's probably looking to get out of full-time football and Randy's already upset him.

It would have been nice to have seen him back in an advisory type role. Still my favourite Villa manager.

Martinez is staying at Wigan

Just seen the news on sky sports. Personally i didnt want him, would have been an improvement AM but dont rate him, think we would still be in relegation trouble next season if had appointed him.

Lambert for me but i feel Randy is running out of options.

Really clampy? Im surprised you didnt prefer big ron, i certainly did although graham did a fantastic job in rebuilding villa from a relegated team to a title chasing team, and i enjoyed it very much , i preferred rons brand of football and swagger.

Martinez is stopping at Wigan.

After missing out on exciting candidates like him and OGS anyone else now is going to be huge let down for me.

Lambert for me. Two successive promotions is an achievement in itself, but they did'nt even look like struggling in their first Premiership season. Ok, he's got a touch of the MON's about him but that's not really a bad thing.

Lambert 49.3 %    win rate
Martinez  26.7 %

I know alot of Lamberts games were in the lower divisions but I spoke to a few season ticket supporters from the championship who said to me Norwich were the best team they had seen that year ( when they were in it ) .

Nope, Sir Graham for me. Not only a very good manager but also a gentleman who even after all this time still has time for us. Besides anyone who manages to get Paul McGrath, David Platt and Dwight Yorke for less than £700k deserves respect.
