I see that Graham Taylor has relinquished his Non Executive Director role at Watford.

Upstairs job at Villa. Any thoughts?

(just speculating)
Yes, but only after we've appointed a new manager and it were to get said appointments blessing. Sir Graham knows the game inside out. I know his 2nd stint was a disaster and he signed some absolute turkey's, but in fairness to him, he was probably bought in because he was one of the few who would have taken the job on under Dougs remit at the time. And that was to, like now, balance the books after an outlay that never brought us the success required to get that money back. He had a tough task on that budget. You could never question the guys knowledge.

He's 67, he's probably looking to get out of full-time football and Randy's already upset him.

How did Randy upset him?

Just read GT's statement.  Doesn't look like he's going anywhere.  Sorry folks

Randy arranged to meet him after a game to discuss new managers, then didn't turn up.

Somebody on VillaTalk seems confident it is Lambert.

hope so , Martinez can share his bed with Motormouth Whelan and miss his big chance.  I am about 6 hours behind reading this thread at the moment

I'm convinced half the posters on this thread are blu-noses in disguise.

How anyone can think Roberto Martinez is a bad manager is beyond me - he is the one who revolutionized Swansea City - the team that dismantled us at Villa Park contained nine players signed by him.  He introduced a totally new philosophy - and took them from the brink of dropping out of the football league completely - and the Swans fans are still bitter he left.

Keeping Wigan in the Premiership with a yearly budget deficit of £14 million is a feat in itself.  And let's not forget - that awful Wigan team stayed up by beating Man Utd, Liverpool, Newcastle, and Arsenal.  We couldn't beat an egg.  Every year Martinez has to cope with his best players sold from under him - and is it any wonder they start slow and finish strong - good coaching comes over months - not overnight - the fact that Wigan are still Premiership should not be underestimated.

And as for the lunatic suggestion that Di Matteo would be a good appointment - that is like saying Tony Barton was our best manager ever - because he happened to be in the hot seat when the team won the European Cup.  Any Villa fan with any sense knows that that Villa team was Ron Saunders Villa team - and Barton - much like Di Matteo - was in the right place at the right time.

Villa need a man who will be there long term - a man who has a vision of how football should be played - a man who can spot talent and develop it - and a man with a habit of turning over the top teams.

That can only be Martinez - and I hope for one that he is the man our owner gets.

Like Dr Josef Venglos? I remember that announcement on a Saturday in July 1990 - I was seriously underwhelmed by his appointment. I think Deadly Doug got him on a £25k-a-year contract then - trying to do it on the cheap!

Rodgers cost Liverpool £5m, won nothing and 1 year in the Prem. Whoever we get his price has just gone up.
