Is it too soon to change my username to John Martinez?
I think Martinez will stay at Wigan
I do hope  so as we don't need a perennial struggler.

That's right, Merv.

No disrespect, but Merv got to the point. Could not understand your ramblings. On saying that I still disagree, as a fan if you happy to settle for mid to upper table and a dabble in a cup then perhaps Mcleish was the manager for you. Personally I want us to compete and not make up the numbers, otherwise we just might as well not be there.

I think we all want to compete, but we are in pretty poor shape squad wise compared to liverpool and it may take 2 or 3 years to get back up to that top 6 level again, realistically top 10 next season would be acceptable but not in the long term.

Liverpool gave greater financial resources than us and a higher expectation level, their fans would not accept being out of the top 4 for long.

Yes we are a big club but not as big as we may like to think, after all we have won 1 league title in 110 years and gone 55 years without an fa cup - top 10 and a good crack at the cup competitions would be a decent start to the new managers reign.

Ah, the old fan comment. It's not about settling, it's about what I'd consider to be an improvement next season and - sweeping statement though it is, what I think many Villa fans would be happy with in 2012-13. Having said that, I've been following Villa for the best part of 30 years, and I haven't seen many trophies being lifted so I'm also pretty realistic about what I think we can achieve.

McLeish was not, and never was, the manager for me.

Seeing a few tweets that Villa have been given permission to speak to Lambert . No credible sources at the moment

Wow, so Rodgers on a three year at Liverpool with £5mil compensation. A bit of a shock to me considering Swans were wrapping up Sigurdsson's deal over the weekend.

If I'm honest, this makes 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' look pretty small time. Can't attract a big name anymore and opting for Rodgers.. Hopefully this makes our job easier.

Let's get someone in and make some signings.

I didn't say I was happy to settle for mid-table and a cup, but it would be a start, and a massive improvement. I am sure you agree and understand that my friend :)

Martinez used to be the manager of Swansea....so we are probably looking at Lambert or Poyet??

Liverpool is a bigger club than us and has bigger expectations, i dont understand how people can think we are int he same league?

They spent 18m on a right back! our highest transfer record is 18mil...

They won a cup and finished in the top half and the manager got sacked - if McLeish had picked up a few more points i wouldnt be shocked if he was still here

they have a huge fanbase world wide, bringing in huge revenue, think we signed up 300 people to our hong Kong aston villa fan club!

they have a phenomenal history that completely overshadows ours...

I hate the scousers probably more than most... I live in Manchester but they are bigger than us with bigger expectations...

It's really anybody's guess.

For me, in an ideal world AVB (unlikely) but would give us something we haven't had in a while. A real wow factor. I can just imagine the numbers of fans that would show up to welcome him to VP if he was unveiled!

Most likely: Martinez, Lambert, Poyet, RDM. Most of us would be very happy with the first two names. Poyet would be ok but a gamble and RDM totally uninspiring.

I don't see the link.  Why would we be looking at Lambert or Poyet because Martinez used to be the manager of Swansea?

Oh that's ok then, we should probably give them our transfer kitty to make sure they win then. Christ 'The Mighty Reds YNWA' were unbeatable in the 70's, yet we beat them 5-1 and 2-1 and they were giants then. Showing these people to much respect. We are one good manager away from them, that's all.

So, if Rodgers is off to Liverpool then I can't see Martinez going anywhere other than to us.  And if he stays he may well live to regret it as a single relegation would blot his CV should he wish to move next year.

I reckon he'd now take it if offered, the bigger question is will we offer it to him?
