Because while we would be delighted with a top half finish and a trophy next season (I know I would), Liverpool demand top six at the very least, top four ideally, and that's why Dalglish is no longer their manager. He fell short of that.

Not sure I agree with your description of our club as an inbetween. Liverpool are in the shit, they have lost the experiance of how they use to recruit their managers. There is no Liverpool way anymore, and the gap between us and them is not as big as it was. So to describe us as in between is wrong. To be fair as a club we are as good as anyone for a young inspiring manager to join, develop and stay longterm where he can make his own mark.

On saying that I still disagree, as a fan if you happy to settle for mid to upper table and a dabble in a cup then perhaps Mcleish was the manager for you. I think it's about mid term and long term goals/expectations.  Right now we need to be OK with middle/upper table, but the ultimate aim is of course to get back to challenging right at the top of the league.

I didn't say I was happy to settle for mid-table and a cup, but it would be a start, and a massive improvement. I am sure you agree and understand that my friend :)
