Don't know if it has already been mentioned, but Pete Colley has stated on Twitter that he has been told there will be an appointment by the end of the week.

As an aside, I think that Mirror story points to Rodgers having a huge ego. You can see both Liverpool and Villa are following a business model of interviewing multiple candidates rather than headhunting (is this an American thing in sport?) and as his stock is high right now, Rodgers clearly thinks he's above the interview process. One season in the Premier has exceeded all expectations, but he was 90 minutes away from being a nearly man if the Play-Off Final had gone differently. I don't have any sympathy for the Dippers but a bit of humility goes a long way.

I can see it from Rodgers point of view.

Liverpool were asking him to inflict all that uncertainty on Swansea merely for the chance of an interview as one of a dozen or so.

Fair play to him on two fronts there - not demeaning Swansea and standing up for his own self worth.

I suspect Henry thought managers would sell their grannies for the mere chance of getting the Luverpool job. Wrong.

I can only think of one manager who'd definitely do that, but pubehead's time has passed.

Not at all.  Not sure what his track record is like when it comes to predictions, but as a Villa fan, I can't see why he would put that if it was unsubstantiated.

If they want Martinez and are prepared to give him money (and they have got to, we have at best 10 or 12 players of proven PL quality, which is nothing like good enough) then I hope they get him.

At least he tries to play football. I never got the idea McLeish was even interested in trying, he was such a piss poor excuse of a manager.

I will be optimistic about next season if Martinez arrives and gets a decent budget.

Maybe, just maybe Martinez is boxing clever - he virtually has a job for life at Wigan with no wild expectations. Whelan likes him and wants him to stay but recognises that
he is in demand . Martinez courts the prospective clubs and then reaffirms his love of Wigan and gets another pay rise. Seems a good strategy to me - ok he may lack ambition but hey, why put yourself under pressure and stress at the likes of Anfield or Villa Park if you can earn millions keeping Wigan in the top flight each season.

Until they get relegated. Which will happen sooner rather than later.

Probably when there are no other clubs beginning with 'W' in the division.

If he comes I would take great pleasure in the fact that we had won the day over bloody Whelan eventually.

He plays football, and you get the feeling if he could build without selling his best players all the time and not being able to replace them he might do ok. I don't think the scale of the selling would be the same at Villa, and he can certainly bring Moses and McCarthy with him if he wants to.

......not to mention getting the best out of N'Zog - we know there is a cracking player in there somewhere.

Not my first choice but a guy I can get behind. And I doubt he'd be coming if there wasn't some financial backing.
Lots of question marks but then I cant imagine there are many likely candidates without them so, bring it on.

It will be interesting at least if he's coming and lets hope the woeful form in the first half of the season is more to do with Wigan's limitations than Martinez's.

Well quite. If he can get 10 goals out of NZogbia and him, Bent, Ireland and Agbonlahor into the same team and firing, we will score goals. Just the other end I worry about. It would be interesting to see him adopt the 3-4-3 he played in the last few weeks at Wigan.

I think Gabby may well have played his last match for Villa.

Year 1 I'll just take us being exciting again. Where watching Aston Villa doesn't cause an ulcer. He knows what makes N'Zogbia tick and if he can find a way to get the ball to Bent on a regular basis then who knows where that could take us. I'll also be a lot more interested in our signings as they'd be players that don't have shins the shape of 50 pence pieces and can actually knock it about a bit. Moses is in the last year of his deal at Wigan and Rodallega is on a free. Maybe we could pinch one or both of them.

I just want to see us keep the ball on the deck and create chances again. Martinez might not win us the league but he will find a way to entertain us
