The was an episode in Dad's Army in which Captain Mainwaring's younger brother turned up.   He was a buffoon and a loudmouth.   I cannot get the idea out of my head that Whelan is the reprobate younger brother of Doug Ellis.

In fairness I think that is not a bad description of Whelan. You can see the pair of them on one of Dougs package holidays smoothing out the deal for Roberto to become Villa boss with no fuss at all.

I think they went for OGS, thinking he would come, but have no 2nd option lined up.
As each day passes it starts to look that way

I think we're into the last week now, based on nothing but a hunch.
Be patient. In footballing terms this isn't taking long at all, yet.

If they're smart though and they're after a decent manager, they might let something slip in time for the renewal deadline on thursday.

I don't care how long it takes as long as they get the right manager and it only takes another week at the most!!

When you say renewal deadline you mean the cheaper price offer?

My son told me the renewal date was June 18th.   Is it really next Thursday?

Maybe, just maybe Martinez is boxing clever - he virtually has a job for life at Wigan with no wild expectations. Whelan likes him and wants him to stay but recognises that he is in demand . Martinez courts the prospective clubs and then reaffirms his love of Wigan and gets another pay rise. Seems a good strategy to me - ok he may lack ambition but hey, why put yourself under pressure and stress at the likes of Anfield or Villa Park if you can earn millions keeping Wigan in the top flight each season.
The most sensible thing iv'e read all day.

Wide of the mark for me.

Martinez's stock will be never be higher than it is now. All he has to do is stay at Wigan another couple of years and the likelihood is they'll run out of luck, get relegated, and he will be forgotten about.

Staying at Wigan for more money would be the daftest thing he could do.

Whatever happens now, I don't think Martinez will be staying at Wigan. He's done all he can there and as Paulie says, his stock is as high as it ever is going to be - time to call it a day.

I totally agree with this.  Couple it with the fact that he's going to lose Moses, Rodallega and Diame and probably not have a great deal of money to replace them with, I'd say he needs to be able to read his own club and see what's coming.  Getting out now, especially to Aston Villa (although it appears less likely) would really suit him. Villa are ripe for managing, I think he'll get money and a free hand to do what he feels needs doing.

I also appreciate that Diame and Rodallega didn't play every week but they added to the squad and will still need replacing.

end of May is the "prices held" deadline, Brian.
